take annual leave to do something different and maybe spoil yourself a little...evenings and weekends not considered ME time. we need some quiet time to ourselves.

If you want to go part-time, you need to make sure that someone officially takes over part of your workload. If not, it's a raw deal. Employers won't arrange that for a few days leave, but if it's a long-term arrangement, then they will have to. It's also a matter of bargaining power - do they value you enough to want to keep you, even part-time?

You also need to read your boss - is he the reasonable type and will he respect your working hours? My boss is so busy that he hardly ever looks for me, so I just get on with my projects and report to him by email when necessary. Occasionally he schedules department meetings during my off times, then I will re-schedule my work hours for that week (that was something I agreed to when I started). I guess switching to part-time from full-time will involve \"training\" your boss and colleagues as they are used to your having been full-time; I started as part-time, so I didn't have that problem.

Your \"training\" is so like mine. My boss is actually based in HK but there's another functional boss u have in SG. Half-way through a meeting, he'll look up and realised he's been talking past 1pm, my knock-off time. I'm pretty ok cos most times I leave slightly before 1pm. Plus working past 1pm is not a frequent occurrence. Even the rest of my colleagues take my cue. See my pack means it's between 1230pm to 1pm. Lunch time for them and going time for me!

Slmkhoo, what is your job?

I am an editor in a publishing company. My work is by project, mostly working alone, and there are deadlines, but since I take on fewer than other people, I don't think I'm slower than others (except that I'm still fairly new and not completely up to speed). I'm also fairly flexible in that I will adjust my schedule, take work home, check emails from home etc if necessary. I limit that, and no-one really demands it of me, so controlling it is up to my own self-discipline.

The downside for a younger person would be the pro-rated pay and benefits, and probably much lower prospects in terms of promotion and pay increases. But at my stage in life, as long as I feel reasonably compensated, I'm not going to fuss.

It's the opposite for me - since I am part-time, I tend to work to the last minute, and sometimes a few minutes more, before packing to go. The people around me, on the other hand, will start going to the loo or warming up their lunches a few minutes before the official lunchtime. So their getting ready for lunch is my signal that it's nearly time to go off (on the days I work half-days)!
