2016 PSLE Discussions (Born in 2004)

Really demoralizing. But what to do? Setting tough exam papers is a norm for most schools.
-
I think in most schools SA1 is tough…maybe they think its a good idea to ‘wake up’ the kids and get them working harder.
However I believe that Prelim will be more manageable as I don’t think they want to deflate the students’ confidence.
I really wonder what PSLE 2016 will be like. 2014 and 2015 could not have been more different. It’s totally unpredictable and that in itself is nerve-wracking. Nevertheless there is no shortcut…oops …except maybe via DSA for some. -

I guess we don't have much choice....our DC just have to face it as it comes.... -

Catddy2002, just wondering, is your dd's class banded, top class? If your dd is in the top class and half the class fail, how much more demoralised the rest of the pupils from the other classes will be?!!!
Ya, my DD school set such tough papers that half the class fail. Though my DD passed but marks not that good. According to my DD, her classmates are so demorlised and the class fill with negative energy. I feel pity for them.
Although some may argue that tough papers will jolt the kids to work harder for the next exam, it must cause many to just simply give up. -
for my daughter, a pass is really an achievement. at the moment, i am still waiting for Math result....what i do know is the non calculator section is a pass but problem sums :nailbite:

I know a certain school in the west that regularly sets extremely challenging papers and it's quite normal for 1/3 to 1/2 the level to flunk. I fail to understand the rationale for doing so. Setting difficult papers anyone also can do, just get the P3 teachers to set for P2 exams. How difficult is that? But what's the point? And this is not just for P6 SA1.

It is risky in the sense it may totally demoralized the avg students, and parents may assume that their children are too lazy to study and penalize them. -
Setting easy papers may lead to overconfidence…but tough papers may not necessarily serve its purpose. Kids get demoralized and unhappy when parents want to revise and drill for PSLE. There is also prelims in August.
They find that no matter how hard they work…how much effort they put in, the papers are difficult. -

Likewise here Janet. I am happy that dd passed her Paper 1, now waiting for Paper 2 Problem Sums Section.
Pray that she passes that Section too. When I asked her how she feels about Paper 2, she said that she knows how to tackle 2 sums and the rest, she muddled through it. :scared:

Disappointed with DS SA1 results but I still smile, praised him for working hard for his exams and encouraged him to continue to work hard. The bad (or good thing) is all those marks deducted are all attributable to careless, so no A* for this exams at all. Less than 5 months to go and I am really at wits ends how to reduce his carelessness… Sigh…

We don't really have a say as to how our DC's schools set the exam papers. I would assume that exam papers are set not to purposely fail the students....but to test the students abilities and knowledge of that subject. I would think that Schools will set some easy qiestions and some moderate ones. Plus some difficult questions to sieve out the better stidents....
