I have been to Shanghai twice
I didn't book in advance for the G train to hangzhou and suzhou
Just be there early to buy the tickets of your preferred timing and have a plan B in case you can't buy for that timing

There are 4 main train stations in SHG: Shanghai, Shanghai South, Shanghai West and Shanghai Hongqiao. There are trains to Changzhou from these stations but at different timing. You have to make sure you get to the right one to take the train that you want. You can use http://www.ctrip.sg/trains/schedule/shanghai-to-changzhou/ to help in your planning.

Train takes about an hour to reach your destination. You don't have to buy ahead but it is recommended (you can also buy tickets when you arrived in SHG). Always try to go for the G train first (train number starting with G) as these are the high speed trains with less stops in between (and they are always the first to be sold out).

As for food, if you are looking for good food, follow the number 1 Singaporean rule: Go for the one with the longest queue. On the other hand, if only for waiting, head for the one with the least people. When all else fails, there's always 麦当劳 or 星巴克.
