DS got into practical round of SPSO. Anyone who is able to advise on the preparations required for practical round? We are completely clueless.

          How were you notified?

Checked the NUS High website. The result is not out yet.

Hi we were notified by the school. Apparently NUSH had sent email to the school as early as yesterday. We got a message from school last night.

Son was with Raffles Science Olympiad, they also hv practical session…3 labs, bio/chem/physics. Can’t remember the detail, its something like checking pH for different type of soils and answer worksheet, advice which type Suitable. For chem, its checking reaction & changes of chem solution after dip in hot water…then note down the change in color.

Can anyone also shared what happen after RSO 2nd round completed?

SPSO, NMOS, IMSO, SJPO, SJBO, SJChO… (It will go on and on)

These are not test, these are not exams. Doing past year papers barely helps and training centers are marginally useful.
What’s useful is actually cultivating a love for math and science, what you want to achieve is having you kids wanting to learn more. Some centres feed your child raw inflating and teach them skills to think deeper, please look for these type of centres. Olympiad-focused centres might and might not work. What you want is knowledge of math and science, not memories of past year olympiads questions.

What is really helpful is to have you kids learn lab skills and learn to come to a conclusion with the results of lab procedure. Most primary school don’t have labs and youtube will really help. At least they don’t look like clueless 3 year olds fondling with test tubes.

Is it true that for the SPSO organised by nushigh, each school can only send up to 9 participants? That’s what written on their website.

But when I look at the award receipients for the past years there were some schools (e.g catholic high) that has more than 10 award receipients..so wonder how that is possible

                      Hi sean wife,

Catholic High is a GEP centre. GEP sent one team while Mainstream sent another.

Ah..now I understand why the GEP centres can have more than 9 award winners..

Seems like catholic high and acs are the strong performers based on past years records. Would you know if they provide special training to those nominated by the school before they go for the competition?
