I'm sure he trained with local associations etc while in Singapore. He only went overseas at 14, so his foundation was built in Singapore.

Just because he won gold, I don't think he should expect to be reimbursed for all/most of his training and living expenses; what he received over the past few years was a good gesture, but it would have been nice for the govt support to have started earlier (but smaller amounts). Surely some sacrifice and expenditure from his family should be expected. I hope the money will be well-used to help those talented kids whose families are in greater financial need.

Utter nonsense in the second article, complete bait and switch in logic.

Why don't they say SG boys pai mia compared to SG girls, since SG girls don't do NS?

All the haters come out because of Joseph Schooling, that's the most regrettable thing about this whole glorious episode.

China is not a good example to use as I don't think any Singaporean sportsman would neglect education and other forms of self-development as totally as Chinese sportsmen. Even Joseph Schooling, with all the training he has done, will eventually have a degree, and he is at most 2-3 yrs behind his age cohort. I'm sure he will be able to earn a living post-sports, even if it's not at the level of a lawyer or doctor.

I knew a family in China with 2 kids in provincial gymnastics training, and their education was quite badly neglected. The school (compulsory boarding, highly regimented) focused on sports training and they were 2 yrs or more behind where they should be educationally in Pr school. The lag gets worse as they get older and are more successful at their sport, and since they haven't taken the major school exams, they find it hard to get jobs. And since they have been living in school with little exposure to the outside world, they have few opportunities to develop any other skills.

dd1 happened to be at dhoby ghaut mrt today and was greeted by a festive crowd waiting for JS to pass by. She decided to join in the fun. She said that everyone was in high spirits and most were in red tops. Supporters were even standing at the MacDonald House rooftop :yikes:


When an open-top bus drove by, the crowd cheered as they thought it was JS and his entourage. Turns out to be a bus ferrying tourists who must be wondering why Singaporeans were waving to them. dd1 said the tourists waved back at the crowd. They must be thinking Singaporeans are so warm and welcoming :rotflmao:

Personally am happy to see the country united and in a celebratory mood. The last time I think we were united in spirit (tho it was in sorrow at that time) was the passing of LKY.

The way I see it, cool_hi was voicing his/her disapproval over our government's Foreign Sports Talent Scheme, a sentiment shared by many locals, including myself.

I think so far, how people have reacted to the Olympic gold is not so much the medal and history making itself but because of Schooling himself.


This kid has charisma. Doesn’t hurt that he is quite a cutie. He has come across as sincere, humble and ever so obliging. If it were any other born and bred Singaporean Olympian, I don’t think the effect would have been the same.

My issue is when it seems (from the general talk) that our government supports some of these foreigners better than our local kids. If that is true, I think their priorities are skewed. I feel we should support our own first and foremost; if we want to offer help to those from elsewhere, it should not be at a level greater than what we offer our own.
