        Hi Rose,

Do you teach Higher Chinese for P6 students? Do you also do home visits? PM me if you do provide such services.

Hi, sory to tag this post so many years ago. I encountered a 1-1 Chinese tutor, asking to add 1 extra lesson purely for Listening Comprension (LC) as Psle is coming. The lesson is scheduled to be 1 or 2 days before the actual paper. Reason being my child’s result (LC) has dropped from the last assessment but still a just pass.

Tutor claimed that all the while, she did not cover LC as my child is able to manage on her own.
I’m wondering is there going to be any difference having this last minute one time lesson of LC?

As a 1-1 tution, it is not cheap & not unaffordable too. If I go for it, what kind of message am I giving out as I do have a concern like should I condone such behavior of adding extra lesson as a way to make extra earnings? Perhaps I’m thinking too much.

          What is your take? Thanks.

My son’s 1-1 tutor covers LC regularly as part of her monthly lesson fee. Maybe once every 2-3 weeks, a short portion of the lesson.

If your child “just passed” her prelim LC, that is not a good sign. I’m not sure what achievement level your child is at, but mine Chinese AL5 and can understand around 80% of verbal Chinese P6 passages, his LC score is usually 18/20.

Unless u are satisfied with the current LC score (and u dont sound like u are), I dont think u have much choice but to pay for the intensive LC extra lesson. The tutor likely has to prepare 2 (or 1.5?) hours’ worth of recordings and printed exam scripts, especially if she doesnt usuallt have rhe materials, so it seems reasonable. If u view it as being held hostage by the tutor, then u will become very unhappy.

One alternative is to teach your child yourself if u are confident, and save the money on the extra lesson. Not sure if this book is still available, but I found it very helpful as they include LC as well (yes I still add on extra practice for my child even tho tutor covers it. Bearing in mind most kids score 20/20 easily. These are very easy MCQ marks to get without any actual memorizing/mugging):
