If not how to live up to his reputation as Chief Kiasu.

I have to say that I disagree. I have never agreed in \"teaching ahead\" so giving them secondary school materials now is something that I don't agree with. Especially when we don't know what school they will be going to or even which stream they will be in. Most of them have sacrificed their life to PSLE for most of the year so I think they deserve their afternoons to do their own thing now and to enjoy their December holidays.A gentle reminder to PSLE parents...
Do let your kids enjoy themselves, but please do so in moderation. The biggest mistake we tend to make is to believe that PSLE marks the end of the battle. In reality, it is the beginning of an even bigger battle. The first tests your children will encounter in Secondary One will happen within a month after school starts (ie. in February), and the work will keep piling up really fast from then onwards. Your child in Secondary school will also be more distracted due to CCA and other extra-curricular commitments. Where they only need to worry about 4-5 subjects in Primary 6, they now have to handle up to 8 subjects in Secondary school. It is not unusual for top PSLE students to fail their first mathematics or science tests in Secondary school. It can be a rude awakening then.
In other words, every effort your child spend NOW, in preparing for Secondary One, will help to relieve their stress in Secondary school. You need to instill discipline in them to manage their own time. Go get some Secondary One materials. Get them to prepare their own daily schedule with slots for play, exercise, enrichment, housework, and familarising themselves with the Secondary One topics. More importantly, encourage them to stick to their time table.
Time will fly past really, really fast. Before you know it, your children will be in Secondary school.
I have just told my daughter that she mustn't neglect her Chinese as we do not speak it at home so I am going to force her to go to the library and borrow some books (any recommendations welcomed!). Other than that, she has Think+ magazine (the secondary school version of Young Scientist) which she hasn't read all year so I will ask her to catch up on that. She is a big reader (in English) so I know she will have her nose in a book a lot of the time.
She will also be catching up on her ballet and music classes that she missed over the last few months then hanging out with her friends and, once school finishes, with her brothers. -
Well, as a parent and educator, will like to share my view.
Both nms1 and Chiefkiasu has their valid points. It is a known fact that progression from Primary 6 to Sec 1 is a big leap. So I would think that ChiefKiasu is trying to pre-empt the gulf by suggesting to let the kids know a bit of work, so, by working out on Sec One concepts, this will allow for some buffer which students get used to the learning.
I believe that nms1 has a valid point as well, that students should not be too bogged down with post-primary school work. So, the best is to strike a balance between the 2.

For my 2 kids, I allowed them to enjoy their year end holidays as they worked so hard for PSLE so it's time to rest and they never touch any Sec School books.
The only thing they did was attending Chinese classes which started only in Sec 1 as I felt language education has to be ongoing, it is not topical like other subjects.
Both my kids adjusted well after the first few months of settling into Secondary School life and they are doing fine now.
So, in my opinion, let's not overdo this early preparation. I have said it before n will say it again - kids nowadays are so smart n pick up very fast. What is more important is parental guidance and support. With good family support, kids can n will go far in their education journey. -
I have been breathing down my DD’s neck for the whole P6 year, I think I am very very tired…To me, Sec 1 is the time where I want to let go and for her to own up to her own action or inaction, I think we agreed (between myself and my hubs) that she’s going to be on her own, she needs to learn to be and if she fails, by all means (better still so she understands the consequences!).

Let's just say I speak from experience. I did let my son play his heart out for the 2.5 months after PSLE, only to be stressed for the next 4 years. Of course, you may all have different experiences. Please do what you think is best for your children.
In any case, I find it strange that parents would be all stressed up with P1 preparation and yet take a relatively relaxed attitude towards S1 preparation. Perhaps they feel that if the kids can survive PSLE, they can survive anything else...

I encouraged my child to read during the holidays, anything that can be read- eg car magazines, game books etc
And in order not to lose money, do finish all the Eng Comprehension and some Chi Comprehensions that

Coz I dunno what to prepare him for sec 1 -.... hahhahha ....I guess I was too tired and wanted ds to be independent - sort of likeI had enuff of PSLE n KO le
the sec 1 reporting plus buying books is \" cramp\" though, must buy all books, uniforms etc within few days - tire all the mummy again .
The child may not get used to the long school hours and twice ( or more for perf art and competitive sports) CCA a week .
Also some sch need to use Laptop , means heavy sch bags

It is a good idea to at least reintroduce focused studying in December. In previous years, I have taught Philosophy for Children as a way of stimulating intellectual curiosity and developing suitable English skills for the rigour of Sec 1.
