        545am?!

For easier logistics, you might want to try own arrangement to school but school bus for returning to home.

I just heard from my son that most of the food stalls in the school canteen had raised the prices this year, some by as much as 30% (from $1 to $1.30).

Today’s Straits Times has an article on food sold in school canteens and it was reported that many of the stalls face issue of high rentals, and are asking for help.

          I’m wondering whether it’s a case of the stalls had been suffering (hopefully not losing $$) previously as they were not allowed to raise prices (gradually), and so took the opportunity now to ‘make up’ for it;

          or

that they had always been given the freedom to set their prices, and this is just another way for them to boost their bottom line.

Apparently the (only) stall that didn’t raise the prices has super long queues every day.

Would the school be able to shed some light on this please?

My kid in lower primary and I find the teachers there very lacking in responsibility. Called up the school at 1.50pm wanting to speak to the Chinese teacher and Maths teacher separately…but found that they had already gone home!

They are not teaching the subjects (facilitate games in class) and expect parents to do most of the teaching at home. This is ridiculous. If the teachers are not teaching, then why do they collect salaries?!!

Some more, many teachers are said to be rushing off to become tuition teachers to earn more money.
Can the MOE stop this irresponsible behaviour? Is it this school or a system wide phenomena?

Hi atrecord, schools do monitor the prices of the food sold but as the prices of food is high now, I think it is inevitable food gets more expensive in canteens as well. My nieces are spending like $3-$4 for food at another school's canteen daily. What I do for my child is to pack food for them. They only buy their own food twice weekly.

                  Hi Nikkei121,
You are saying that your child is in lower primary and that the teachers are pushing the teaching job to you? Are you saying that your child is facing some issues with learning?

I can understand your frustrations with coaching your child as my children do face problems learning too. My friend used to send her daughter to brain.sg and said that the intervention there has helped her child. Maybe you want to check it out with them? I am in no way related to them, just hearing some positive feedback from my friend. I haven't been there before, so I cannot comment on the effectiveness of their programme.

To be fair, my sister is a teacher too and she has spent long hours in school. If you cannot find the teachers at 1.50pm, they maybe conducting classes, having meetings, workshops, CCAs. So many of my friends have also left the service and I think parents have to play a part in helping our children cope in school too. It has been reported in the newspaper that we are losing experienced teachers every year.

                  http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/education/long-hours-stress-cited-as-reasons-for-leaving-teaching-force

Is the child you mentioned your first child in school? Don't ignore the signs as I did with my son. He was not coping in school and I only intervened at P5 which was quite late. He had to be exempted from CL and barely passed his exams. So, when my girl started to show difficulties in learning, I was able to intervene at an earlier stage.

                  All the best to you.
