MGS vs RGS - wholistic view

some1 told me most mgs girls = good wife/mum. hope this is true.

My impression of SCGS/MGS girls from loo-ooong ago, that they'll be good tai-tais. Does this equal good wife/mum? :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: Note: This is a tongue-in-cheek observation from waaayyyy back. Might not apply to current SCGS/MGS students. So don't flame me. :rotflmao:

To me, these two schools are so different . RGS is an IP which takes in top girls from the various primary schools all over Singapore of which many were head prefects/prefects/leaders. On the other hand, MGS' cohort comprises mainly their affiliated girls via affiliated COP, with a small number of non affiliated girls via public COP. RGS' peer is more of NYGH and MGS is more comparable to SCGS. Both RGS and MGS are premium girls schools and aim for holistic education. However, different profile/type/background of the girls translate to different life goals, character, perspectives, definition of success, survival instincts, attitude towards work etc. Well, RGS girls also end up as great mums and wives. Look around at the many RGS KSPs :salute:

I agree with phtthp. one of my girl classmate from other primary schools infiltrate into MGS Secondary, according to my girl, she is rude, no proper manners, behavior no good. Teacher called up parents many times also no improvement from the girl. sign…

I agree with snow crystal.

Actually there is really no comparison between the two on an apple-to-apple basis. It is really a matter of whether you like apple or orange. They are in different league and I wish not to generalise the behaviour because both schools have children of all types. Being in different league, culturally they are definitely different.

Dd has DSA offers to RGS (sports) & MGS (academic) - we are very torn between both wonderful schools. She is talented but not highly disciplined so hopes the competitive environment at RGS will push her towards greater academic heights. She loves the idea of a mission school and holistic environment. It sounds like, fr previous feedback, that MGS provides a less stressful environment for developing empathy/EQ (don’t flame me, just impressions) while RGS provides a better environment for training of the IQ? We live much nearer MGS than RGS. At the end of the day, DD’s ultimate goal is to land herself a nice scholarship to either the ivy league or Oxbridge/London U. Results wise, i dont think she is a shoo-in for 260 rgs type cut off hence the sports offer. Not sure if this wld lead to subsequent difficulties while there. Love to hear thoughts/ opinions of parents on both schools and which wld more likely help her fulfill those lofty goals. Thanks.

Since your DD got into MGS via DSA (Academic) and the parents are looking for academic excellence, then MGS is a more logical choice. Else in RGS, your DD can expect to spend more time in the sports than in her studies.

As for sports, it is highly likely that dd will continue whether she is in MGS or RGS cos she needs to keep fit anyway. In any case, i hear that RGS’ training requirement is only 3x a week while she already currently trains far more than that.

Mgs Secondary is dual track.


Your daughter’s dsa offer in MGS - is it for 4 years’ O level, or for 6 years’ IB programme ?

If her MGS offer is for 6 years IB programme, then the last 2 years will be in ACSI (IB). This means now at P6 : she have to make a decision what to choose ?
If like this, means she got to choose between A level vs IB programme.

To choose 6 years’ RGS/ Affliated to RI GCE "A" level programme, or to choose 6 years’ MGS / affliated to ACSI IB programme.

The Sports DSA in RGS will tie her down for next 6 years, all the way from Sec 1 until A level. She is not allowed to change to other Cca, throughout these 6 years. Commitment in Sports, in terms of time spent on training, is very heavy, intensive at RGS. Her passion & interests in this Sports dsa, must be extremely strong to keep her going, persevere on, during times when she feel tired.

During such times when there are Inter-Secondary Sports meet round the corner, due to intensive training, some of the Sports girls skip academic lesson, borrow lecture notes from classmates, to zap & study. This means that she must be able to find supportive classmates to help her out, during these stressful times.
However, do bear in mind that, borrowing lecture notes from classmates to zap, is different from your child attending lesson on her own. Or take the Teachers’ handout, which sometimes can be brief, as being an IP school, they expect a lot of independence in fact-finding, from the girls themselves, either from read up themselves or resource from internet.

If rely on school mates lecture notes, if her friend is not a detailed enough person, did not take down lectures properly, can miss out a lot of salient, key points. Worse, if her classmate whom she borrow notes from, have untidy hand writing.

Sec school, different ball game: no longer just 4 subjects, only. But can be 8 or 9 subjects to tackle, with Humanities, Literature, Geog, History, etc. Where is she going to find time, to study so many subjects ?

Also, right now in P6 :
How is your daughter’s studying pattern ? Is she the self-motivated type, or is she the type that rely on every single subject, for tuition that type ?

Reason why one have to self- ask is because :
Imagine, if a child in primary school every single 4 subject need to rely on tuition teacher to survive, what more, when enter Sec school, have 8 or 9 subjects, to manage ? Does it mean the child is going to hire 8 or 9 tuition Tr, to teach each individual subject ?

Those classmates, school mates in RGS who entered by T-score in psle lowest around 261 & above, are usually goal-oriented, achievement oriented type of girls, although at times fun-loving too. Some of the girls are very vocal, (a bit debating type) in expressing their opinion, during class lessons’ discussion.

If offered 4 years O level MGS : after O level, MGS Sec girls may goto RI, National JC, Anglo-Chinese JC, or Hwa Chong or other JC. ACJC is popular, amongst them

However, since affliated T-score is 200, many MGS primary girls will enter MGS Secondary. They are well-taught in terms of missionary school values, in their primary school 6 years.

However, there are also outsiders who enter MGS Secondary, via T-score, not from missionary back ground primary schools. At times,
They may mis behave in Secondary.

There may be expectation from RGS on your DD’s participation in the sport, besides training, there will be competitions which may take up her attention and time.


Academic-wise, while MGS (IB) cuts a very low profile, its COP compares favourably with that of RGS. Moreover, as one of the few schools to offer IB, it offers a more-rounded exposure as compared to the A-levels. JMHO.
