MOE is looking to provide all rounded knowledge at secondary school level before they move on to more specialised courses in poly or A levels.


In my opinion this is important as students need to have some kind of general knowledge to know what is this world / society about. No point having having 100 marks for math but not know some basic knowledge of the society, etc.

hi. i just took my olvls and havent got my results but was considering going to MI next year. these are a few of my concerns, hope to get some help


1) im a 5n student, will it be too late to study for another 3 years? (i would then be taking alvls at 20 year old)

2) i didnt took pure sciences and want to pursue sci stream. is MI slower to cope for people not having pure sci foundation?

3)i live in the east and went to check it out and the travelling time is about 1.5hr. isit worth it to travel so far? and what time do sch normally start?

4)is cca compulsory in MI? i know that cca is not compulosry in JCs but what abt MI? i want to focus on studies than getting a Cca.

if u need more information, my prelim result was Eng-E8, math-A1,comb sci(phy,chem)-A1, Amath-A2, comb human-E8, olvl june chi-B3.
i know looking at my english i might not get in at the end if i fail my eng. but was considering the conditional admission if im eligible for it.

btw my reason for wanting to pursue education in MI is that i rather study math and sciences than go into poly and i dont know what to take in poly too(like most courses dont interst me).
i dont want to go a normal jc as im afraid that i cant cope as my eng is quite bad(even if i do pass my eng its max a C5)

this is what i feel i will get after siting for the papers

If the extra time helps you do better, then it's worth it. No point hurrying and not doing as well as you could. Some people do better at a slower pace.

It should be slower because the curriculum is spread over 3 yrs instead of 2. But you will need to find out whether they will allow you to take H2 sciences. I believe those intending to take H2 sciences and Maths might have to take a test at the start of term to qualify.

School starts at 7.55am. They know that some students stay far away (my daughter has classmates who live in Pasir Ris), and as it's the only 3-yr A level school in Singapore, they know that students don't have another option. If you think the 3-yr system suits you best, then it's worth it.

It's compulsory to do at least 1 CCA. Some require more time than others, so you should find out more before joining.

I can't answer this question - why don't you call the school to ask, or visit their open house? I don't know when it will be, but probably some time in Jan before the O level results are released. You can call them and ask.

You will still have to take GP in MI as it's part of the A level requirements. If you don't think you can do it, then you should look again at alternative routes. What are your plans after A levels? If you don't pass GP, you probably can't get into university. Also note that only about 30% of MI students make it to local universities, so unless you have the means to go overseas, it's not a given that you will gain entry to university even if you pass GP.

If you don't do well enough to get into university, you may decide to go to poly after that, which will prolong your education even longer. That's OK if you don't mind, but it seems you would prefer to finish more quickly. Many poly courses are science and math heavy, so there should be something that appeals to you, even if it's not exactly what you want. Maybe you can look closer at the engineering and IT courses.

I would advise you to go to Poly Open houses and take a good look at courses offered. Don’t choose to take A levels just because you don’t know what Poly education is. To be frank the gap between A levels and O levels is huge. Also it might be 3 year programme but doesn’t mean they take full 3 years to teach.


E.g. for math, 1st year they do few topics, probably to test water and identify students who might want to leave after year 1. Year 2 they will go at a much faster pace and most of the time in year 3 they will be doing revision.

Anyway MI = 3 year, Poly also 3 year so it does not mean going to poly means you spend more years in education.

So he's decided to go into MI? I thought he was so set on poly. What combination will he be choosing? Do note, however, that most of the polys still seem to admit sutdents by O level results even after the student has taken A levels. Anyway, let me assure you that MI teachers are very supportive.

I remember your DS was given a CCA leadership and he also studied by himself without you having to push him. I think those are signs that he is maturing and have self discipline. Sometimes we have to let our children step out of their comfortable zone. Isn't it a waste to study A level first and poly later if we assume worst case scenario? By the time he starts poly, he will be 21 years old (after A level and NS) while his classmates in poly are 16 years old. Will it affect his confidence? He is not only taking an extra year but actually 3 years.

I hadn't thought of that - it's so different for a boy because of NS. My daughter will only be 3 yrs older if she gets into poly this year, and since she appears (and acts) younger than she is, it's not a concern to me. But janet, you may want to consider this.

his present COP cannot enter the infocomm course in ngee ann or sp. my brother & hubby have advised him not to spend precious time travelling to a poly which is far as there are lots of projects and the distance to/fro will mean less time to rest and get work done.
