      One question regarding L1R5.

If a student takes Higher Mother Tongue, can he use HMTL as L1 instead of English to get the 2 Bonus Points?

If you use HMTL as L1, it replaces English as first language. It doesn't give you 2 bonus points anymore.

But if you use English as L1, you can use HMTL to deduct 2 points from your L1R5 raw score. CCA of 2 points can be used too, so in total you have 4 bonus points.

Hope you understand what I am trying to say.

That was my understanding at first. But when I went thru the JAE Booklet on Bonus Points, it says as long as you pass English and HMTL, you get 2 bonus points.

No where did it say you must use English as your L1 in L1R5.

Also when my DS received his result slip, It uses his HMTL as his L1 because he obtained A2 for it compared to B3 for his English.

I went to an Open House today and asked the VP and he said as long as the student passed English and HTML, he will get 2 bonus points.

This is exactly what the JAE Booklet say.

        Are you sure?

According to the VP of a secondary school, you can use HMT as your L1 and still get the two bonus points. However, in this case, you can't use Normal Mother Tongue grade in your R5. To include your Normal Mother Tongue grade in your R5, you can only use English as your L1.

So, as long as you pass your HMT paper, you get your bonus point.

According to MOE website, we can use English or HMTL as L1. It also said as long as you pass English and HMTL, you get 2 bonus points.

You are correct to say we cannot use HMTL as L1 and include normal Chinese as one of our R5.

In my DS case, he is not using his normal Chinese for one of his R5.

OMG, is it right? All along I have the impression that you enjoy the 2 bonus points if your L1 is English and not HMT. Aiyoh now then I know after my kids have completed their Secondary education. 😂

In this case, PRC students have a clear advantage over our local students since they are stronger in Chinese.

            Thanks for the clarification.

I’m actually not a parent but a student. I was wondering what my chances are of entering hci with L1R5 7

Congratulations! If your L1R5 nett is 7, I think that it is tough to enter HCI because the COP is 4 for both science and arts. Do you mean L1R5 of 7 raw? In that case what is your nett L1R5?

my nett is 3 but I'm wondering if I'll be able to enter since there might be a chance that the COP for science drops back to three.

Is hci or ri better? I actually can’t come to a conclusion despite visiting both the open houses and listening to the talks
