The fortunate thing is he still have time on his side. Plus the polys are very open to appeal cases or accepting students who meet their COP but may not have chosen the course in JAE. In the polys, course managers generally have autonomy over their courses so it pays to talk to them as you appeal. That said, keep an open mind and cast your net wide.
choosing MI initially was because we thought 3 years would be a spaced out period but really forgot that he would have to face 2 killer subjects and 1) not knowing what kind of teachers he would get 2) no money for tuition.

thanks so much for all the valuable advice. greatly appreciate.

feb 2 would mean we would have to appeal with the 3 choices which meets the cop.

it was a mistake to put MI as first choice...thinking that he would have 3 years but forgetting that GP will be a killer as well as sciences without tuition.

had a chance to talk to cousins over CNY holiday who attended poly and jc. with poly, it's modular....finish and move on. 2 cousins who attended jc both admitted GP & MT are very tough.

I believe it also depends on whether there are vacancies in the respective poly courses as they would have been filled during JAE application.

                True, but...

While the number of vacancies are typically fixed for JAE, polys have greater autonomy and there's flexibility for the course manager to stretch it if he/she is willing to justify it šŸ˜‰

Unless it's one of those super popular, super small class courses (in which case, the COP would probably be very low), there's no harm in asking.

for JAE and especially for appeal cases, o level result should preferably be above cop for the course. appeal case is desperate...cannot mess up anymore.

Be prepared that the school may call him up for an interview to assess his suitability. Prepare a portfolio (or CV) to showcase his strengths. Did you or dh accompany your son to any of the poly's open houses?

have you decided on which courses/poly? You definitely have to cast your net further than NP and SP and probably shortlist 3~4 courses unless you are very sure his score is close enough to their COP.
