I am looking for a patient piano teacher to teach a Primary 2 boy piano at my place in Jurong East. My boy has no prior experience in playing. What is the rate like? And any teacher to recommend?

Hi parents!
I'm a medical student who teaches both classical (from beginner to diploma) and pop piano part time.
Here are some of my musical accomplishments:
1. 2nd prize winner of Cristofori Piano Competition 2009
2. Finalist at 2011 National Piano & Violin Competition
3. DipABRSM (with distinction) and LRSM (with distinction) holder
4. Music director of RI(JC) Piano Ensemble back in JC
5. Keyboardist and music arranger at SAF Music & Drama Company
6. Arranged music for Our Xinyao Concert 2015
I conduct lessons from my home at Whampoa (nearest MRT - Novena/Boon Keng) but I'm willing to travel to students' homes if they're conveniently located.
Feel free to drop me a message at 9178 5243 if you're interested!

Hi everyone,
I am an ex-competition/concert pianist with 8 years of experience in teaching music from beginner to diploma level. As a product of the SG education system, I understand the need for students to juggle various commitments and will try my best to give them a balanced, manageable workload while preserving their passion for music. My lessons are conducted in a purpose built studio with 1 grand piano and 1 upright piano, but I am also willing to travel to the student's place of convenience.

In my opinion, 4 years old is a good age to gain exposure to music appreciation (clapping in rhythm, singing along to a piece of music, etc). This would build a good foundation for them to embark on piano studies when they are about 5-6 years old.

Hi,
It really depends on your child. Some starts when they enter primary school, while some starts when they are 2 years old. Some people thinks that girls can start earlier than boys. If you are wondering when to start your child on learning piano, I would say the right time is now.

Thanks both for your replies.
I know there are different type of piano lessons like classical, pop, etc. and different schools teach differently like some will skip the learning of theory notes and start straight on practical first. Is that correct? What is the right or traditional way of learning? Should I be starting my child on classical music first? What should I be looking out for when searching for a gd piano sch or teacher? -

I don't think you can really start practical without any theory. The basics like note values, counts, simple music directions, and note reading needs to be learnt together with practical. Maybe theory is not taught on its own, but instead weaved into the practical lessons.
You don't really need to decide from start whether to go with classical or pop. Just start learning first, and depending on your child's interest, later decide whether to learn the classical pieces, whether to take exams, or just learn pop pieces. Lessons that is based on the classical track will probably have a more defined structure, as many teachers and music schools are familiar with that. My daughter started with classical piano first, and only later on studied with a jazz teacher for jazz / improvisation.
Read through the thread for advice on looking for good teacher or school. Much has been discussed. -
