Yes. Watched it too.Watched an interesting programme on Channel 8 yest. I thought I shared it here for the DSA sports parents....esp since DSA season is up pretty soon. The show talks about the two young men's sports dreams and how they overcome the challenges of managing studies and sports after entering the Singapore Sports School. More importantly, the struggle the parents faced to support the child's journey especially the ACSP-RI boy who opted out of RI to go SSP when he only has 1.5 years to go before graduation.
....
I've noted following points:-
1. One came fr a family of table-tennis national players. Career in this sport for Clarence is quite set. Hope our nation nurture this talent.
2. The ACSP-RI chap may be a GEP kid (I may be wrong) with overwhelming studies & projects. Family able to provide for him so there's no worries for bread&abutted issues. It's never easy to be exposed to an environment that's very competitive academically & one wld feel more strain to juggle studies which may cross against sports competitions. SSC provides good environment as the setup of a sports school prime the student for competitions as well as support & make-up for skip lessons or exams.
I'll support my kid if he's got talent like these. Yet, back in my mind, I've gotta be careful to guide & counsel towards this choice as it'll never be smooth journey as in the regular school. The child must hv the maturity, ability to manage time to juggle both studies & sports and to top it - enough $$ for those extras.
The sportsman will hv to keep proofing himself/herself for a spot/opportunity to compete in prestigious challenges. Some parents may not be able to watch & support the child every match, never mind the fact that parents presence also gives some pressure to perform & not disappoint.
Joseph Schooling's parents had to sell their property to fund child's dreams & nurture talent. There're only that much limited national funds for talents.
Going fwd, I wonder how future sec admission via DSA will move towards. What kind of talents & how many of each does the nation want to nurture? How wld MOE reconcile every school a good school against young people's desire to select & do their sports via-a-vis parents' nagging worries abt their children's academic/economic future.
Yet to see how future DSA will be like :
1. Interview & audition after presenting P5 & P6 (CA1 & SA1 results)?
2. Parents start lookout what talents child have, pour funds to further nurture to gain trophies, etc & DSA into school
3. Parents watch the \"top\" academic schools, identify available sports, etc & start \"nurturing\" child towards the school.
Looks like the future may be geared towards parents having deeper pockets to fund academic tuition industry & sports or arts industry. :moneyflies: Can't imagine kids will in future be running around fr academic tuition to competitive swimming /canoeing or even archery lessons, etc. :imdrowning: Some things can't be hurried nor nurtured before the child turns 12.
Just making my pte thots audible. :faint: -

I’m curious how much these top schools (the "top" 4 IP schools) weigh between sports performance and academic results during DSA selection, especially when there will not be any GAT or academic ability test:
Scenario 1: If a student A is ranked 1st in a certain sport but school grades is, say, 80 on average vs student B who is ranked 2nd in the same sport but school grades is, say 86 on average from the same school, who would the school pick if there is only one spot?
Scenario 2: If a student C is ranked 1st in a certain sport but school grades is, say, 88 on average from a neighborhood school vs student B who is ranked 2nd in the same sport but school grades is, say 85 on average but from a top primary school, who would the school pick if there is only one spot? -
I am also curious about the above. I understand that some top IP schools have already ditched the GAT test.

I believe, because the students are \"too similar\" in talent and acad, interview will play a very big part......to re-affirm coach's choice.I'm curious how much these top schools (the \"top\" 4 IP schools) weigh between sports performance and academic results during DSA selection, especially when there will not be any GAT or academic ability test:

If school is going to give a CO for sports dsa, then if couse choose the best podium finish lah.
The few % points not so critical once gets into sec school -
Nebbermind:
Yup, if it's DSA for sports, naturally the best finisher gets the reward given the small disparity in academic result*If school is going to give a CO for sports dsa, then if couse choose the best podium finish lah.
The few % points not so critical once gets into sec school
* If the winner have a border line result of 50% to 60%, it's possible that he / she will be overlooked in favour of the second candidate.
