My boy shows a very keen inclination for songs, music, and dance. He loves swaying, swinging his feet and even tapping his fingers to rhythm sometimes. Is there any sort of musical training that one can do at home to help improve his sense of rhythm and musicality, recognising different sounds by different musical instruments, before sending him to try musical instrument classes when he’s older? what age can we get him to expose him to formal music classes?

any one has any feedback on musikbox at turf city?

This KS mom here has already taught my 1yo the different note values & rhythm patterns (crochet, quavers, semiquavers, ), and the basic symbols & terms. 😜 He actually loves all these very much, esp when he gets to beat the rhythms on different drums. 😉

We go to staccato in horsecity since he was 17mos.

how did u teach your 1yo the different note values & rhythm patterns (crochet, quavers, semiquavers, ), and the basic symbols & terms? u bought an actual drum set for him to tinker around with?

i have only bought a wooden toy piano so far. looking for tambourine, castanet and a toy xylophone now…

I print out the symbols eg. treble clef/bass clef, semibreve, minim, , etc onto cards and show him. Also same for the terms like \"adagio\", \"allegro\", etc. My \"baby\" can read, so it's quite fine to progress this way with him - he understands quite well.

As for rhythm patterns, we do very simple ones, like for 4/4 time which has 4 counts in a bar, then maybe I show 4 crochets and we start with beating evenly 'ta-ta-ta-ta\", or 'ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti' for 4 pairs of quavers., and then we progress to a little more complex ones like \"ta ti-ti ta ta\", which is 1 crochet, 1pair quavers, and another 2 crochets..

I have a toy drum - any can do lah. But I have a really big one that was passed over from neighbour. You can clap hands also can for the rhythms.

One good music \"toy' that is cheap is harmonica & recorder.

              Staccato - check website: http://www.staccato.com.sg/index.shtml

Class is 45mins. My baby enjoys it very much.

Phankao has music background so if you have, you will be able to achieve phankao’s success.

2 other schools to expose music training at about 18 months is Kindermusik and Rhythm in Me.

yes, i have piano background. a bit rusty in terms of practice now, but i still can remember most of the theoretical stuff. tks for the alternative suggestions for classes. 😃
