Hi,
Any of your kids taking HMT? My boy teacher commented it not very useful and we weren’t very sure but my boy wants to take HMT. -

I think what his teacher meant was, whether he intends to apply to a SAP school? The marks/grade in HMT is not used when applying to a non SAP school, so it is not useful from the teacher's point of view?Hi,

HMT at upper primary is tough. If your kid is truly interested in taking HMT, think it is ok as he/she will be committed to do his/her best. The bonus points for HMT are applicable only if your DC plan to get into a SAP secondary school after PSLE.Hi,

As a parent, you will have to assess and monitor if your DC is managing well the 4 Standard subjects even with HMT. After all, the PSLE t-score is computed based on the 4 Standard subjects. This is the reality of our education system. -
Hi MerlionInGermany & Applecrumble,
Thanks! I actually do not have the intention to let him go for SAP sec as I will see how he fare in PSLE. For now seem to early to assess this and it seem to be his wish to take HMT (though he is not very strong in writing). I intend to take this sa1 & SA2 as consideration as I heard I can pull him out if he cant meet his results.
Any idea which SAP sec school has a higher chance to cut off point? is it applicable to all SAP sec school. It seem very tough when he hardly speak mandarin since young. -

Your approach to assess his P5 SA1 and SA2 results before deciding to proceed with HMT in P6 is sound. Yes, you can opt out at end P5. In fact, your DC's teacher may make a recommendation if your DC should continue with HMT for P6.Hi MerlionInGermany & Applecrumble,

The bonus points for HMT at PSLE can be used for any SAP secondary school. However, understand that to continue HMT at secondary school level, there is a minimum criteria to meet (please check MOE website for the exact details).
If your DC qualifies to take HMT in secondary school and if he gets A1 to C6 for it at 'O' Levels (assuming that he/she passed English Language also), there will be 2 bonus points which can be used for JC/Millennia Institute admission.
Understand that HMT at secondary school now includes Oral (previously no). So, if your DC hardly speaks Mandarin since young, you may have to help him to change his habit and brush up his oral skills. -

Thanks for being so details and you must have done a lot of HW on this. I got a better understanding on HMT now. I got a friend son just passed PSLE last yr, his grade weren't so good so even his HMT is good that doesn't lead him to a school of his choice. I believe it does help kids with good grade to a SAP school he/she desire with the bonus points.
Hopefully he can pull thru this yr so he can continue to take HMT in PSLE, just to add some bonus in his record. HMT does motivate my son to work harder in Chinese and it a good sign. -

Actually, the time commitment is also a considering factor. For some primary schools, students who take HCL have to stay back for extra lessons 1-2 times a week. For other schools (usually SAP schools), HCL and Chinese lessons are being taught concurrently, so there is no additional time commitment.
