I don't understand why old JCs like Jurong and Tampines will go into history

They were around for many years and had a rich history
Actually many Singaporeans are very rational. Just provide some facts and figures and explain the rationale why all these established old name JCs have to go. Government has forgotten about the need for effective communications with the public.

Location: generally, students will be willing to consider a JC that is either nearer their home or central. So having more JCs in the central area offers all students more choices but also means more competition for thses JCs. Fewer are willing to cross the island from east to west, say.

Perhaps some parents should start questioning the MOE Minister, BTW, which Minister is responsible?

Seriously, I am surprised that such big decisions were not communicated before implementation. Reading the news yesterday, it's obvious the affected teachers are unhappy n worried for their rice bowls (especially the older ones ) even though MOE kept assuring that they will not lose their jobs, Full of BS, I will say!!!

RI does not set its COP; applicants set the COP. If suddenly only those with 20 points apply to enter RI, then the COP will be 20!

As for dilution, there is minimal difference, if any, between students with 1-2 points difference in L1R5 score, so even if the COP falls by a point or 2, it doesn't make any difference to the school. The current COP is set by the available places.

It will be interesting to see if RI's COP drop to 4 or 5 ????? years down the road????? Perhaps finally all those who always wanted to enter RI but can't, can now finally enter their dream school?

In the yesterday’s newspaper, it is written that "For example, Anderson JC may take in 800 to 850 students, instead of the current 750 or so." If the remaining 19 schools are to absorb 50-100 students, that would mean 950-1900 students. It is about the right number of students from the 4 closed down schools. An increase of 50-100 students per school for just 1 year could cause disruption. The problem is how to get teachers just for 1 year for the remaining 19 schools that will absorb more students? Relief teachers? If relief teachers, most likely the quality of schools will go down. The teachers from the closed down JCs are unlikely able to be distributed to other schools because they still have JC2 to teach at the closed down JCs. What is MOE’s plan to tackle this problem?

Remember, the problem is for 1 year only before the 4 merged schools start receiving new students from the closed down schools in 2019.

for preschool to secondary levels, minister should be Mr Ng....Mr Ong is for higher education.
that's the confusion now...JC is considered higher education or still falls under Mr Ng? ONE education minister sufficient...why must have 2 education ministers? might as well have 2 PMs.

                  good one.

even if RI says yes, the students have to meet the COP first. not all students are cut out to enter RI or Hwa Chong. they won't lower standards just to take in more students.
looks like you still donch quite understand how COP works

RI is an independent school so enjoys full autonomy.

But if minister \"asks\" and their principal says no, probably we will see a new principal.

                    good one.

There won't be \"lowering of standards\", as intake depends on COP. The school just needs to increase the cohort size.

Seen from the other perspective, the remaining JC2 students now get better attention of their teachers. Parents of this batch of JC2 should rejoice.

There are a few articles in today's The Straits Times relating to this school mergers matter.

Since the affected JCs will cease admitting students from next year, we shall see if, come 2018, max COP of least popular JC remains unchanged at 20pts. Else, we’ll have ground to suspect that MOE is indeed downsizing JCs to force borderline scorers to go poly instead.
