that brave woman should be commended for saving the lives of 3 boys single handledly…if not for her, there would be 4 deaths. thank you.

SINGAPORE — Following the death of a 12-year-old boy who drowned in the waters near East Coast Park, Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said that there is a need to do more to equip children with open-water swimming skills. He was at the boy’s wake on Tuesday (May 9).

I respectfully disagree. While more knowledge and skills are always better, the most important is to learn never to underestimate Nature. No matter how good one is at swimming in the swimming pool, it is NOTHING compared to the sea. And swimming is something that one needs to keep up - it is not like cycling where you can just pick it up again anytime. If you have not been swimming for a while, the required stamina and body strength is simply not there. Also take note of the tide - is it coming in or is it going out? If the tide is going out, it may look shallow but it will pull you out and you may realise that you are literally out of your depth sooner than you expect to be.

in a swimming pool, one can get cramps.
out in the open sea, there are tidal waves which could pull the person out.
no matter how good swimming skills one has, he/she can never fight against those strong undercurrents.

I note he said \"open-water skills\", but I'm sure most people will just interpret that as \"swimming\". I agree with ammonite that just being able to swim is not good enough when it comes to open water. I have been a competent swimmer since my Pr school days, but have always found swimming in the sea quite scary. Some swimming ability can breed over-confidence and carelessness, especially in children.

Yes, exactly your point. We already have an ongoing programme across schools to give all kids a chance to pick up swimming, which I think is great. However I think it will be terrible to have a 3 session programme to introduce open water skills to this age group. It is a difficult undertaking (just imagine the number of safety boats required), and how many children can/will realistically keep up with the required stamina/strength over the years? The result may just be that too - over confidence.

Just to add, I really applaud the lady for her courage. It was really a very brave thing to jump in three times with a child waiting on the shore.

her own child was on the shore and it was a very risky thing...and this lady went in alone to save the 3 boys. that's truly very courageous. this is the sea and not a swimming pool.

maybe this is the kind of holistic education that Asians or Singaporeans are so lacking…

The only selfless person I had met in my whole life is my ex colleague/peer who single-handedly (after a drinking session late at night) saw a drunkard or berserk man with a knife in his hand trying to attack the girlfriend. Without a second thought, my ex colleague went up to stop the man…
                      People above Self…
Even volunteerism is so laughable b/c the students just want to get LEAP points…
