I suspect that my 9 yo boy may have ADD. These are the symptoms that make me draw this possibility :

- For both Chinese and English comprehension, he doesn't read the passage properly to answer the questions. All the while he doesn't like to read. At the rare times when he read, he doesn't like to read mystery books. I think it is because he doesn't like to think about the mystery. Anything that he feels difficult, he will give up.

- His Maths is no good. For problem sums, he gives up easily.

- He is very careless in all his work. Be it copy from the helping words, he can copy wrongly.

- He is absent minded. He loses a lot of water bottles in school. This year he lost 3 already.

- His handwriting is awful

However, I did not hear from his piano teacher that he has learning difficulties. He is very interested in playing badminton and will keep bugging us to play with him to practice his strokes.

Any advise or comment is appreciated

My advice is to get a psych assessment done for him at IMH or KKH, then work on it from there. Educational therapy or behavioural therapy (esp. Applied Behaviour Analysis programmes) works well in such cases.

Even hyperactivity is not \"outgrown\", I think, they just learn better self-control as they grow, and eventually, they select jobs where that trait doesn't matter so much. For inattention, they can adopt self-help strategies, but that also needs time to because they usually have to be older and more self-motivated in order to adopt those strategies.

Parents can help by helping the child increase attention little by little at home, and imposing structure and organisation habits on a daily basis.

Perhaps can try to develop more of his interests, like sports and piano as you mentioned. I have taught one Adhd student who has very high diploma in piano. Once there is interest, students with Adhd can concentrate very well, better than normal people in fact. This is called \"Hyperfocus\" (https://www.additudemag.com/understanding-adhd-hyperfocus/). Adhd faces problems when there is no interest, or the task is boring.

Doing homework to adhd children is usually boring task. However is inevitable that homework need to be completed. It become a tug of war between parents and child if child doesn’t want to do.

Some of these do look ADHD like. However, he could also simply be lazy and resisting studying. My own son is 9 and we just recently finished with his Mid-Year exam preparations. LOL. It was trying in some ways but he was ok with some subjects like Math which he has always been stronger in.


I shall report back with the results in time. I give my boy 6 different supplements btw... but no meds.

That is true. We have to find ways to motivate them. With praise and rewards for example.

I would advise avoiding medication as far as possible... maybe use meds just before the big exams if really necessary. I suggest you Google ADHD medication and growth etc. I lost the links.

Anyone tried essential oil for their ADHD kids before?My friend just shared with me, it helps his P4 son.He can speak and focus better.She also send him for brain training class.
