      Hi,

My DD wishes to take up Biology in JC although she has not taken it in Secondary. Is it possible for her to do so?

I was given to understand that there is a possibility of Bridging programmes in such cases. Is this true?

Kindly advice as I am anxious about whether it is really possible or not. She has done Physics and Chemistry in Secondary not Biology.

      Confused / Anxious Mum.
I know in many JCs, you would need to have taken the Science subjects in sec school to take it at JC. I'm not aware of bridging programmes. Why is your daughter so keen to take Bio at JC level?

She wants to choose a different career path from the one her present subjects offer. She always did have an aptitude for Biology but did not make the selection when she should have. Now she wants to do it in JC.

I'm not aware of any bridging programme for Bio in local JC.

Biology at JC level is ~ 1.5 years. It builds on 2 years of lower secondary science, and 2 years of upper secondary biology. If a student did not make the cut for Bio in secondary 3, you will not survive an even larger gap in JC.

Some universities have foundation courses for students without the necessary academic background.

Thank you for the feedback. It was very useful. I hope she will rethink her decision and get some counselling before she makes her choices.

Some universities offer bridging programmes. There aren't that many courses in the local unis that require Biology specifically. Even Medicine doesn't require one to have done Biology.

Thank you for that info. Good to know that Medicine doesn't require Biology. Glad I posted on this site. I've been feeling quite anxious not being able to get adequate information on this. Really helpful.
