Hi! Was a pure history student in sec sch and studied h2 history in jc

I find that for most students, especially from what i heard in jc from my classmates, they tend to find bi-polarity and the cold war a more challenging topic in secondary school, since it grapples with more complicate concepts. Some of them even gave up studying this topic for Os. But a disadvantage to forsake studying the cold war for Os would be if you/your child intends to take history in jc, since the history curriculum emphasise a big deal on the cw and understanding said complicated concepts.

I think history really needs interest to score. my DD was so into history, that it was the only A besides her English. Rest of the subjects especially the sciences all didn’t do so well. So yea, I guess the secret to doing well in history is the passion for the ‘stories’.

Passion is definitely half the battle won. And passionate students are a joy to teach.


But do take note that students who are very passionate about History might not necessarily do well if not guided. This is because History is often read as a narrative but scoring in an examination requires students to structure their arguments well. Hence, a student who ends up telling a story of trying to impress the examiner with how much he/she knows instead of picking out relevant details might end up not doing very well. The main reason why students struggle with History is precisely because its delivery in class and the method of testing often do not match.

Agree with missdizzle. Deliberate practice is very important--I've seen many of my students go from F9 to A or B by looking deep into their answers for problem areas. They don't beat themselves up for mistakes made but are happy to have found out what went wrong, so that they can fix it.
