I don't know what is the difference between Ladybird Reading Scheme series and Ladybird Key Words series...... :stupid:

It is the same thing ! It is my fault. I used to call it the key word series, then I realized that on the front cover it is \"Key Words with Ladybird\", and on the back cover it is \"The Original Key Words Reading Scheme\".

Some people simply call it the \"Peter and Jane\" series.

For those who are thinking of trying out this series, I would advise you not to buy the complete series first.

The reason is because every child is different. Some children may only need the a series. So there is no need to buy the b series. Some children may be very familiar with the words after reading both book a and book b, so there is no need to by the c series.

You can just buy book 1a and try it out. If it works well with your child, then buy another book.

If your child already can read some words, then it is even possible to start from a higher level, then book 4 or 5.

Also my advise is that the child should at least know all the phonics letter sounds, and is starting to use phonics sounds to read 3 letter words, before starting to read the Ladybird reading scheme. It will be easier for her to learn the words.

Gernonimo Stilton series of books are a good read ! They are my son's current favourite. He is primary one and he enjoys reading them. In fact, he can read the book again without finding it boring. Think this book draws its appeal to the exciting adventure stories that the mouse, Geronimo Stilton embarks on. It has very interesting highlights of the words to illustrate the meaning of the words itself eg. when you come across the word \"classical music\", there are musical notes on the words, for the word \"mouse\", there is a shadow of a mouse shadowing the word etc.

No, you need not start from book one as every book is about a different adventure.

I have read one Geronimo Stilton book, and though I agree that the artwork of the book is very enticing, I am not in the least bit captivated by the story line. So actually, I am trying to wean my 8 year old off it. It is, however, a good start for readers who are ready to take a step to independent reading. I would recommend it for 6 - 7 years old.

Oh absolutely about Geronimo Stilton! My son loved it earlier this year and then suddenly went off it. I was glad! All this talk about good looking women, I feel, is not exactly appropriate for young children. I didn't know how to explain to my 5yo!

Hi parents,

I'm having difficulty in teaching my 7 years old boy English, who is in P1 this year. I want to improve his English but do not know how.

We went to the library to borrow books together but he don't really seems to have the interest to take the book out to read. Everytime, I've to ask him to go read books and he will ask me to read to him instead of he reads it to me.....

I can sees that whenever he comes across words that he don't know how to read or understand, he will loss interest of continuing to read the books.

Hi debbie! Do you, in fact, read to him regularly? Say, bedtime stories? It may be that you have to invest in this, in order to stir his interest. I.e. read to him regularly until the day he starts choosing books for himself.


Another tip - does he have any particular area of interest? Eg. robots, superheroes, cars, planes, etc. ? If so, look for books in this area.

What I am trying to do now is to allocate a time to read on a daily basis. Eg. 10-10.30 would be their reading time. We would ask them to stay in their bedroom, choose a book and read. After which it is followed by bedtime.

We are trying to stick to / encourage that schedule on a daily basis. Hoping that over time, this becomes a part of their lifestyle.

I did read to him regularly but always i read to him. Eventhough he interested in dinosaurs books, he still wants me to read instead of he reads to me. The problem is, I cant be borrowing only dinosaurs books and not the books that is like story based kind..........??? like that how to improve........

Good idea! Mommy and Daddy should also set example. Otherwise they may ask, \"Why do Mommy and/or Daddy not read regularly?\". And if Mommy's or Daddy's language skill is not good enough, then how will Mommy and Daddy answer?

I read to our DD from the time she was 1 yo but actually can start even earlier. Then, we included bedtime stories in her daily schedule when she got older. We also read a lot, and all sorts of things (fiction, non-fiction, magazines, newspapers, etc.) She loves going to the library with us and nowadays, she will choose to read on her own or us to read to her. She has a variety of interests but sometimes, she does go through phases where she asks for a particular topic like food, etc.

I have taught young children to read effectively as early as 2 YO but I must give credit to such children for being able to absorb well at that age. An average child should be able to read independently simple chapter books by 4 half to 5 using the same approach.


For your case, I believe it is inevitable for you to continue reading with him until he is confident to take off on his own. Don’t give up as you will be surprised with the results.

If chapter books or picture books do not appeal to him due to his age, perhaps you can try some educational comics books.

It is more important to develop his interest in reading than reading technique. If the reading technique is his barrier, then perhaps check out his phonics learning to build his confidence?
