All About Grooming & Encouraging Good Reading Habits

I have taught young children to read effectively as early as 2 YO but I must give credit to such children for being able to absorb well at that age. An average child should be able to read independently simple chapter books by 4 half to 5 using the same approach.
For your case, I believe it is inevitable for you to continue reading with him until he is confident to take off on his own. Don’t give up as you will be surprised with the results.
If chapter books or picture books do not appeal to him due to his age, perhaps you can try some educational comics books.
It is more important to develop his interest in reading than reading technique. If the reading technique is his barrier, then perhaps check out his phonics learning to build his confidence? -
But when you asked them to choose a book to read, they read by themselves or you have to be there to read to them?
Do u encounter any time whereby they don't know the words and stop reading it?MMM:
Hi,
I am trying to instil reading in my P2 and P1. They are not the avid readers currently.
What I am trying to do now is to allocate a time to read on a daily basis. Eg. 10-10.30 would be their reading time. We would ask them to stay in their bedroom, choose a book and read. After which it is followed by bedtime.
We are trying to stick to / encourage that schedule on a daily basis. Hoping that over time, this becomes a part of their lifestyle. -
My 4 year old can read simple words, but when put together into a sentence (book), he has difficulty. why I said that? he reads the book like robot! (if u know what I mean) and I dunno if he even understand what he is reading! :?
usually people read book with a flow right? expression, etc. but he read it with one tone.hahha. :stupid: -
May i know what kinds of educational comics books u r refering to.....?
I did sent him to phonics classes. But his phonics is not powerful. Especially when comes to blending of the words. But he did try his best to say out the words.
He still attending ICR but thought of canceling it cause he hve to learn school spelling words, ICR spelling words and Tutor spelling words, which i finds to tiring for him.ks2me:

That’s one more skill for parents, especially mothers , to pick up… the skill of story-telling…
We have to learn to read to our children and read it well… dramatize if possible and exaggerate the actions. So if you’re reading the story of Little Red Riding Hood, make sure you sound like the wolf… when you come to that part… I love story-telling actually …
Kids are good at mimicking the parents. So be sure , they will read the way you read and talk the way you talk…
My goal when my kids were young was " Read a book a day" to them… But soon a book was not enough for them… and I was like reading 4 or 5 at one go… Thank God they were not very thick books then…
I started reading to the kids when they were babies , sitting on my lap.
I’ve never looked back then. When they were in k2 and pr one, they would hit the books on their own and read while eating and even walking… and i’ve to stop them from reading during meal times.
I’m thankful I’ve invested and cultivated in them this love for reading…
Be patient and persevere ! It’s never too late. You will reap the rewards one day… -
I dun know which book he is in now.....he is doing some comprehension pages and other pages are spelling words that the teacher will give them and they have to listen and spell out the words. Is it the same?

There is no hard and fast rule to when a child will \"learn\" to read by himself - if your son enjoys you reading to him, you should try to accept it as his way of bonding with you. But I understand this can get very tiring.
I did read to him regularly but always i read to him. Eventhough he interested in dinosaurs books, he still wants me to read instead of he reads to me. The problem is, I cant be borrowing only dinosaurs books and not the books that is like story based kind..........??? like that how to improve........
If let's say your son's reading skills is still a bit slow, the only thing I can say is: so long as he has no serious language problem, you will simply have to keep reading. I'm sure as he progresses in primary school, he will pick up the skill. Don't be concerned or worried that other kids his age are \"better\" than him - they are all very young and mature at different speeds. He will catch up eventually.
A 7-year-old can have a big vocabulary but compared to an adult it's still limited. It's perfectly natural for him to not recognize many words in books. By all means, let him read simple books. If he encounters a word he can't recognize, you have to be there to teach him. It's as simple as that and we cannot escape this duty.
Your husband should help. Even if your kids do not want him to read to them, don't give them the choice. You are the mother, you choose. Have your husband sit with them and read to them. After a while they should accept this new alternative and give you a break.
As for books, there are many story books to do with dinosaurs!
Search the public library catalogues for them. In fact, children's books never cease to amaze me with their variety.

This reminds me of \"Harry and his Bucket Full of Dinosaurs\". It also has a cartoon series. Go to this page for the book list and brief summary of the series. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_and_His_Bucket_Full_of_Dinosaurs
