what did KFC do during his reign? sigh, I can't think of any. even during the Lee family saga, he was MIA.

He didn't run to check on the Govt. He knew exactly what the role of the Prez entails unlike the other 3 Tans who didn't understand what they were running for.

There was no recession or major stimulus packages during his 'reign', so he wasn't asked to unlock any reserves and so you hardly hear from him! hhahaa...

I believe he was asked by the late LKY to run in 2011 (even George Yeo had to step aside). Dr TT isn't the sort who needs $ or covets fame or power. Dr TT quit politics twice to return to the private sector. He didn't bother with the salary cut in 2012 either. He ran because of LKY or LHL - methinks.

The pres must be a highly trusted person. In the light of the Huang Jing case, I hope the committee does the proper background & security checks on candidates and their family, esp since this is a reserved election. There're bound to be candidates from the private sectors, MNCs, NGOs, etc who might never have been subjected to Govt's security clearance before. In future, we might also see candidates who are new immigrants heading Indian or Chinese MNCs listed here.

Er.. no, I doubt if any of the other 3 Tans didn't know what the role of the EP entails - particularly TCB, I'm sure he must have understood it very well. 😉

As for TT, ya I agree that he doesn't need the money at all. (I understand he's closely related to the OCBC founder?) And I actually wonder if he regretted running for presidency had he known that he would receive only 1/3 support votes (and would, as an ex-DPM, barely win a mere ex-backbencher to secure the post)..

Mdm Halimah already clarified 2 weeks ago she was certified 4 times as a Malay minority candidate since GE2001, so doubt she can revert to her dad's race for future elections reserved for Indians!

Is there any provision that says that a person cannot be a member of more than one racial community? :scratchhead:

I posted something similar to your question earlier, citing my many biracial, triracial and quadracial friends' complex cases. You can tell I've no answers either, whether they could freely run for PE reserved for their father's or mother's race.

However, for the purpose of PE, I think candidates can only declare one.
Submission of community declaration
8F.—(1)  A person desiring to be elected as President must submit a community declaration in the prescribed form to the Community Committee.
        (2)  A person making a community declaration must make one (and only one) of the following statements:
        ...
        (b) that the person considers himself to be a member of the Malay community, and wishes to apply for a community certificate stating that the person belongs to the Malay community;
        ...
It is the Community Committee that will 'accept' or 'reject' the race for this candidate as declared by him or her, to put it really bluntly:
Consideration of community declaration in reserved elections
8G.—(1)  This section applies to a reserved election.
        (2)  The Community Committee must accept a community declaration submitted to the Committee and notify the declarant in writing of the acceptance, subject to the following provisions:
        (a) subject to paragraph (b), the Community Committee may reject a community declaration if it is not made according to this Act
Not sure if the Community Committee looks at the race stated on their NRIC. Also not sure if the 3 hopefuls have already changed their NRIC race to 'Malay'. I recall Farid Khan said his shows 'Pakistani'. Nonetheless, all are able to change their race after 1 Jan 2010:
REQUEST FOR CHANGE TO DOUBLE-BARRELLED RACE

        Eligibility

With effect from 1 January 2011, Singapore citizens born to parents of different races may request for a change from singular to a double-barrelled race if they have not changed their race previously. Singapore citizens who changed their race once before 21 years of age, and are 21 years of age or above, will also be eligible.
I trust that the Committee will not anyhow approve the switching of races of candidates from election to election. That's 'RACEmandering'!!! But the GRCs can switch their preferred one and only minority rep from election to election. I think in one GE (2007?), Mdm Halimah wasn't the minority rep but Tharman was for Jurong GRC (citation needed).

Maybe meant for TKL n TJS only who were promising stuffs not within the ambit. Not sure about TCB.

'Barely' because it was post GE2011 when anti PAP emotions were raw. But SG voters are kiasu so 30% still played safe by voting for another ex PAP TCB. To me, 还不是不敢投给外人?

I suspect that the first judicial challenge is more likely to come from whether a particular election should be reserved. For example if HY is the next EP, someone may well challenge by arguing that calculating whether an election should be reserved for Indians/others should begin from HY and not Nathan because HY's father is Indian.

May I change the subject to PE2017?

Read these comments by Masagos Zulkifli. Totally agree with him!

              http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/religious-extremism-cultural-erosion-among-challenges-faced-malay-community-masagos

Let's showcase the best of our indigenous Malay culture thru this EP & spouse. Did anyone notice that our neighbours' leaders and Johor royalties look very progressive, modern and moderate?

Hope to see the same reflected in SG, which is a younger and much more modern multiracial metropolis. Don't give me 保守派...

Which 'first judicial challenge' are you talking about?

Wait for the TCB appeal verdict...

Actually I was chatting with my friend that WKW is a Peranakan. So...is he Malay + Chinese? Can he be counted as of 'Malay' descent?

Judicial challenge as to whether one can be from more than one community.

As for WKW, dunno. TCB never asked. 😆

In the meantime, look who's contesting after all. SURPRISE! 😉

Didnt PM say it'll be in Sep already? They want to change the PE cycle cos too close to NDP and NDR. There'll be a period after 31 Aug when you have no President.

Yeah, surprisingly, no MPs asked that when they were amending the PEA...

Good that Mdm Halimah's confirmed she's running. Only wondering if it'll be a walkover. During Nathan's 2 PEs, all contenders were declared ineligible, so we didn't have to vote at all.
