[PSLE MT] PSLE less weightage in Chinese / Mother Tongue
-
3Boys:
Based on this, no one should abuse or intimidate you, because you have given a fair explanation. (Although I did that quite violently yesterday with another person in another forum/discussion board). My native dialect is Teochew. Until I started P1, I never conversed or in mandarin nor had any contact with the written chinese language. I never ever considered myself to be anything else than a rooted chinese guy. When I attended my aunts and uncles weddings, they were all in the traditional chinese style.
However, my Chinese-ness was never ever rooted in speaking MANDARIN. It was a foreign a language to me as was English or Malay. Incidentally, I found English far easier to learn than Mandarin (i.e. far less effort to acquire fluency and vocabulary).
Teochew is one of the Chinese dialects. There are many different dialects we all know. However the Chinese language now we have is the one language of the Chinese people all over the world.
Although you did not share what was the circumstance you were not able to get exposed to Chinese at young age, but now, you as parent, you have the opportunity, capability and duty to let your own child to learn that language, and learn it well. You shall be proud of yourself when your child is able to speak, write better Chinese than you.

Clearly, NOALIBABA has a different attitude.
Come on, 3Boys, don't let yourself continue to believe that Chinese is difficult to learn. Don't deprive your child that chance. All you need is a change in mind - that I want to learn it. Then you will start getting help. And I promise I will be here to help any parent who wanted to learn Chinese, as I am also learning it. -
nan.nan:
Well, I believe it is difficult to learn, but I do not take a defeatist attitude. The irony is that my FIL is a Chinese language teacher, and HE of all people, did not feel motivated to help my kids along in learning the language. They have all been in chinese enrichment from nursery school on, but I tell you, it is not the same has having a chinese speaking family. Even a partially chinese speaking family is not good enough, they always revert to speaking English. But I will not focus on it to the exclusion of everything else.Based on this, no one should abuse or intimidate you, because you have given a fair explanation. We will do what we can, but I do not take kindly to folk beating me over the head with the 'cultural' stick. -
Ain’t not going to hit you with any stick.
Give you carrots - rich in Vitamin C (Chinese). -
Anyone read today's newspapers ? On page 2 :
A new PSLE formula: EM+1
In the article, it was written that only one in ten students do very well in English, Maths, Science, but struggle in Chinese.
How can MOE change policies just to suit the minority ?
The article also proposed that schools should take the best of Chinese and Science, only English and Maths are compulsory. -
I do not understand the new formula. Can anyone kindly explain to me :?
-
BlackAngel:
Since only one in ten students have the problem, then only one in ten of the top secondary schools should become the \"I hate Chinese school\" (or I don't have the brain capacity to learn Chinese) ! That should take care of all these people.ha, i agree to one of the post, Set up a school called: I Hate Chinese secondary school. Those who select to go to this school no need to count chinese in PSLE. just need to use 3 subjects = 300 marks.
DSA Entry Condition: They must prove that they really hate the subject to the core and want to migrate overseas because of this subject. A medical visit to IMH is preferred. This group of losers (or you can call them bright sparks or elites) are given a new syllabus called CL H (H for hatred). They only need to know 3 phrases to pass CL H. 我恨华文, 我讨厌华文, 我不是华人。 -

Meaning only 3 subjects are used to calculate the PSLE score. English and Maths, and the best of Chinese or Science. This is only an idea of the Straits Times journalist, and I think it is a very bad idea. -
tamarind:
then those who is good in Chinese can save the time in studying Science and those good in Science can forget about studying for Chinese??? emmmm..thats sound illogical...and will make the system worse..... :faint:vlim:
