It's only troubling when you have people who merely parrot their working husbands' opinions or repeat what the EDMW kopitiam folks perpetutate.

Sometimes they don't know what they're ranting about or why they're supporting certain individuals or causes.

The fact that TT opposed OTC's recommendation of a MRT system was well-documented and a simple search would surface the archived Straits Times articles. Those who lived through that period would likely recall reading Straits Times headlines about this argument between TT and OTC. No need to turn to TOC or Temasek Review, good old Straits Times has all the information.

It would be more credible if you've admitted everything came from his time in the civil service or better still, when he was under MOC or LTA. Was it based on your DH's memory, 'having lived through that period', of reading the ST headlines in 1980 as a prechooler or toddler? Or did he lift them in recent years from alternative media sites, Wiki and EDMW forums and have you parrot here to discredit a former president?

Thankfully, you've admitted it yourself it's all lifted from third party sites in recent years. Hope you can come up with something that's from your own personal experience. Try not to be like some EDMW folks who love to parrot opinions (often construed out of context) that aren't even part of their own personal encounter with the victim concerned.

I really don't wish to talk more about Dr TT who's left Istana. It's like wasting my breath or ink, but since MRT has been brought up, let's get this right.

You're right. It was then Finance Minister Dr Goh who was concerned about the $5bil budget. There were 2 camps if you retreive those 'well-documented' archives Mdm Lee pointed out.

Dr TT (not in charge of purse strings) was in Dr Goh's camp. He opined it was 'foolish' to prioritise MRT over public housing in the 1981 debate.

But let's be objective. Look at the SG economy, unemployment rate amid the global recession of 80-82. Remember in the early 80s, many new HDB towns were being built and it continued right into the late 80s. There was an overheating of the construction sector, especially after the new Changi Airport had just opened in 1981, so said the historians.

Given that the reserves Singapore held then weren't as bountiful, it's understandable that pragmatic financial and econs fellows had to prioritise projects and exercise financial prudence. Dr Goh and gang had relied on the Harvard University experts' report (the bus-based plan) which favoured expanding our bus and feeder services to connect new satellite towns you have today.

On the other hand, OTC being an architect eagerly wanted it built amid the economic recession. He was an idealist and sometimes could be rather foolhardy. Anyway, the plan was eventually approved by Cabinet and Parliament after the proponents sought alternative opinions from another team of angmoh experts in 1982.

I won't say Dr TT was dumber or myopic, or OTC was smarter or had better foresight. It's based on collective wisdom. Pragmatists and idealists tend to hold different priorities for different valid reasons. Guess the key here is prioritisation; Dr Goh and Dr Tan never said abort the plan. The MRT plan had been mooted in 1967, long before OTC's time as Min for Comms, but it was put on hold a few times as they had other pressing priorities.

GIC:
Dr TT's role in GIC's losses. I recall in 2011 the year in which he resigned, the institutional investor had not sold off their shares yet. Well, not surprising as those were long-term investments. The losses started surfacing after the sub-prime crisis but they (including Dr TT's team of sucessors) held on to the shares until May 2017. I'm not entirely sure if Dr TT should take 100% blame as he was Deputy Chair (Chair was LHL hor!) until 2011, and according to the Corporate Governance page, the entire Board comprising various decision making committees 'assumes ultimate responsibility for asset allocation and performance for the total portfolio'. It couldn't have been his unilateral decision and honestly, many institutional investors worldwide were also exposed and suffered tremendous losses due to that 08-09 crisis.

Strangely, why didn't anyone credit Dr TT for approving the Citigroup investment in Jan 2007 which reaped profits as of May 2017? They conveniently forgot that high risk investment = Russian roulette, i.e. either high returns or big losses. Not even Wall St investors own a crystal ball. Hindsight's always 20/20.

I don't think Dr TT is perfect. He's just a STEM dude who isn't able to connect with people.

Back to president-elect candidate Mdm Halimah Yacob who was never a Math person, never an Economist, never a Finance or Trade Minister and never a Banker, how ah?

If STEM expert from MIT, finance minister and banker could not manage our past reserves well -- according to Dr TT's critics, then electing a union legal officer as President is worse, right?
