      BlackAngel:

DSA Entry Condition: They must prove that they really hate the subject to the core and want to migrate overseas because of this subject. A medical visit to IMH is preferred.

Instead of IMH, the approach should be this: they must have consistently show that they have real problem in learning the MT or CL since P1.

perhaps it is more an attitude than an aptitude...
some parents are just very resistent to learn CL, how can you expect their kids ?. 子不教, 父之过..
if they are willing to learn and still have problem, then it might be the teaching approach problem. 教不学, 师之错...
those who still have disability for CL only though try very hard with very good learning approach are very rare....

Yes might be rare but we don’t know for sure cos on our forum, we have a resident member 3Boys, I also know some friends like that but the only difference is those friends are exam smart. Despite a clear handicap in the language, my friends have exam smart techniques to pull them thru with an ‘A’.

          yalol, exam smart is needed....

but i still can't figure out if a person can excel in EMS, why can't he learn MT? :?
if they clear mindset problem, still have problem, then it is disability problem....

            3. Hence the special school will demonstrate concerted effort to address this unique group. To warrant such special attention, they have to be cream of the crop and demonstrate learning disability for their MT.
Very few of the minority 10% will be able to demonstrate this learning disability. Because most of them don't have the disability, they only started to learn Chinese too late.

MOE should setup nurseries and kindergartens where only Chinese is taught (no English at all), and kids can attend since 3 years old. Families that speak only English at home should send their kids to these pre-schools and I can guarantee that they will have no problems in Chinese.

the other thing i also hard to figure out is those complain SG will lose talents becoz talents (not good in MT) are forced to migrate…

please lah, those talents (excel in 4) and scholars ALSO migrate in the end… so why blame it on MT???

              可怜的母语啊…

Yes agree Tamarind, the minority is also small.

However to solve the issue on hand something fairer and concrete can be done first.

In tandem funds should go into preschool teaching of MT to prevent such occurance.

For all we know after solving current issue n having a better preschool learning approach, this special track may be automatically aborted or diminished in future for only those born with special condition that LKY talked about, not wired to be bilingual.

even if start late, still possible to learn it well. there are too many successful examples of late learners....

they also know 3-6 is best age to lean MT or any lang. and they are aware that many kindergartens provide good Chinese enviornment, but they still dun send kids there.... the worst part is perhaps they just dun want to learn..... sigh

Agree with you, people migrate for many reasons and not just because of this single reason. The summarized phrase for the reason is known as comfort zone. Everyone needs to find their comfort zone so if any condition fail in their comfort zone, they will pull the plug and go whether it is MT, cost of living, pace of living, opportunities...etc etc etc.... So let's not be myopic and blame on MT...

ya, make it compulsory to learn MT (say, min xxxx hours) prior to primary schooling.

Just wondering, how about Thai or Indo Chinese couple turned Singaporean and child has to choose Chinese as MT? There might be a growing numbers of such children too since our government promoting citizenship to foreigners. Can someone advise if such kids are compulsory to take MT or hv special waivers?
