You should resist the _____ of not wanting to brush your teeth. You should ______ from doing so as.......

      temptation; refrain

Yes this sounds best.. but how many P6 students can get this šŸ˜“ I only got such phrases as I grew older.[/quote]
What most parents or kids don't realise is the importance of using English phrasal verbs correctly. šŸ˜‚

There are lists of basic phrasal verbs that one should be equipped with. However, it only works if you have superb memory. Otherwise, use them often in speech.lol

          yes, resist the urge.

Some might argue that it is a little contemporary in usage, having found its way into urban dictionary. Lol

Its meaning is clear in the cloze though.

Refrain from is a phrasal verb. You might call it a fixed pair.
'Refrain from' is a phrasal verb?? Sir Oxford says no.

Refrain by itself is a verb.

A phrasal verb is a verb that is made up of a main verb together with an adverb or a preposition, or both.

For example, refrain fromdoing something, as Sir Ox showed in ur pic fšŸ˜„
That shows that refrain is paired off with FROM

              refrain from =keep off
That said, i could ask Sir Oxford about the meaning of KEEP and he would also supply me with a definition.

But I need him to tell me what to pair up with. Keep away, keep off, keep on... šŸ˜‚

Meaning, you can't say refrain smoking. But you can say refrain fROM smoking.

OK, thanks so much! But sometimes Mr Google may not be that accurate. Sir Oxford says if it's a Phrasal Verb, they will indicate 'PHR V' at the bottom of each entry šŸ™‚

                  https://s1.postimg.org/1podktx3gv/20171001_151639.jpg\">

You know PHRVs are separable, but prepositional verbs are not. There are many verbs that somehow are betrothed to certain prepositions but they are not called PHRVs.

Indeed. Across the Pacific, the Yankies are much quicker to categorise phrasal verbs, it seems. In the bookshops, you can find loads of books dedicated to idioms, slangs and suchlike... British , on the other hand, are more traditional.

In any case, it is edifying to know that the local kids are exposed to both kinds of english, and just about any kind out there. :rotflmao:
