      Hello everyone šŸ™‚

I'm a full-time educator running group classes (my centre is in Jurong West) and private classes in River Valley/CCK/Bugis (groups), etc. Just joined Kiasuparents! Quite a few parents have called me over the past 6-7 years saying that they'd been referred by someone through forums on KiasuParents so I finally created an account!

      (I'm Miss Er - give me a shoutout if you're a parent I know!)

My two cents on the topic of \"how to help my child become a better writer\"... Writing must be developed over time and can be painless with close guidance. Does it require reading book after book or memorising \"model compositions\"? Nope! A voracious reader might not make a good writer. A good writer is always observant and sensitive to his world. He should also pay attention to the nuances of language -- why choose one word over another? Every word has a specific meaning. (Something they will realise going into Secondary/JC levels.) As for \"bombastic\" words as mentioned by a previous reply to this thread, I feel that we should be economical with our words. Going into higher levels, using long words and stock phrases just sounds awkward. We should work on building language that is useful for life!

My approach also includes introducing children to storytelling techniques in literature. I have mini literary appreciation sessions during my P1-P3 group classes and we discuss the way the story has been told -- the use of literary devices, building of suspense, an effective ending, etc. You can try doing this with your child, especially if they are in lower levels. Children love being read to -- and don't put down picture books, those are some of my favourites -- you can see some of my picks at @helloteachermel (instagram) šŸ™‚
