      Quak Quak:

Hello, I am new to this forum. Would like to check if anyone has any information about CHIJ TP in terms of their approach towards academics as well as nurturing the girls?

In addition, how is the school's focus on Tennis? My daughter has been playing tennis and she is keen to pursue tennis if she qualifies for the school based on results.

Tennis is not bad in IJ! We win most of the competitions & plus point, all Tennis girls are extremely athletic! I have two classmates who are in Tennis, and they are able to run so fast during track meets and all.

ij tp gymnastics is it good? coached by which coach? thinking of building portfolio for dsa for girl. came across ij tp so ...

Hi all, I am currently a secondary 1 student from CHIJ Toa Payoh and I have my stories to share. As a student in the top classes 1/1 - 1/3, I must say that we have good teachers. However, there is the first class teacher for Chinese who does not teach well and the other classes have surpassed the first class in the topics that they have learnt.

I must say that if you/your daughter is from the primary school and end up in 1/4 - 1/5, you will learn D&T and home economics that we do not learn. It is a disadvantage for us in the long run. For students in 1/3 - 1/5, as majority are from the primary school side, they actually have form teachers that teach English, Math, the main subjects etc. and therefore meet the students more and can contact the students more often. (The school treats those from the primary side well. Kind of.) I find myself unable to see my teacher for a few days when I need to contact her about something urgent.

If I were to talk about the school system, they make students \"know their place\". If they are in the bottom classes, academics are not focused on, rather, hands on classes.
Also, the school changes the timetable every term so students that have extra curricular activities outside the school have a hard time managing their time and sometimes have to leave school early, missing out on important things.
The school, also, has a \"Student Forum\" that addresses student issues. Though that might sound amazing, you might think that the school cares for their students, but in fact it is a facade. They tell us that \"changes take time\" which is a code language for \"we don't really care\".
The school does not allow phone use during recess, which might be good. It might be the school's only good point.

I do understand that mothers from the school want to send their students to their alma mater but you must consider that times have changed, including the school's system.
So please bear this in mind.

A plus point about this school is that there is a really good lower secondary Science teacher. She strives to teach us more and even prints out extra worksheets to go in depth about that topic. She's good.

You might wonder why I chose this school if I have complaints about it. No one I knew went to this school. So judging solely based om the CCA choices and the PSLE cut off point, I chose it.

And yeah, this school was my third choice. I have thought about transferring to my first choice school in secondary 2.

Thanks you for reading till here. :congrats:
        I hope this helps.
hi may i ask what is your first choice

hello there, parents and students. i am currently in the graduating cohord of chij secondary, and would safely say that this is a great school to be in. though there’s many bad remarks given about my school on this website, majority of the students come out of the major examinations with distinctions.

          re : https://www.chijsec.edu.sg/achievements/gce-o-level

we are taught to be women of distinction, to treat everyone with care and compassion. teachers in the school are approachable and open to students, and are always willing to help students lagging behind in their studies. most of the school celebrations are conducted and created by student leaders, which allows students the exposure of public speaking, being able to stand on stage with courage and the creativity to make these performances. friendships are easily forged in the school throughout all the levels. however, many secondary 1 students that first enter the school, may feel fear inflicted in them when first meeting the upper secondary, though it would change in a matter of months as the intimidation would soon evolve into friendships. academic wise, the teachers will always be able to push students with the worst grades, to the best grades (knowing this first hand). I was an F9 Math student in secondary 3 but became an A2 student by the time it was prelim 1.

CCAs in the school excell very well, netball has a high reputation as they are national champions for both divisions. Choir has distinctions and great preformances as well. Different CCAs such as Tennis, ODAC, Gymnastics, Dance, Basketball, Athletics, Squash, Band, Girl Guides and many more CCAs are always available to your daughter/you in the school.

          http://m.todayonline.com/sports/chij-clinch-back-back-netball-double & 2015 national champs.

Hope you will see the IJ Spirit in the school and allow your daughter to enroll in CHIJ ! πŸ™‚ :rahrah:

in reply to the secondary one girl that would love to transfer to a different school, she has not experienced the full feeling of being a CHIJ Secondary student. I’m sorry to hear that she would want to transfer as CHIJ Secondary is EXTREMELY different from CHIJ Primary (Toa Payoh). Hope she finds a sense of belonging in a different school, good luck in your future endevors ! @christineanne .

Hi I'm also a student from CHIJ and it seems like you have a few misgivings about our school.

About the Chinese teacher who doesn't seem to teach well, from what you say it seems to be more of him/her teaching the topics slowly? Maybe the teacher thinks that he/she ought to go through the topics more thoroughly, hence the slow teaching. You could go to your Chinese teacher and tell him/her that if you haven't already, how else would the teacher know that his/her teaching style is unsuitable for your class? If that doesn't work, during the forum with the principal, you could give feedback about this teacher and the school administration will act on it accordingly. I had a similar problem with my Sec 1 Literature teacher, whereby that teacher was used to teaching upper secondary students and thought that we understood all the basics easily. When we raised this matter during the forum after exams, we had our teacher changed the very next year. I'm not sure if the forum for Sec 1s happened already, but if it has, you could always email or go to the HOD for Chinese?

As for the making students in the bottom classes 'know their place', by 'hands on classes' are focused on, do you mean that they take D&T and FCE lessons which the Starplus classes (1/1-1/3) don't? These classes will take FCE in Sec 2 too so there's no need to worry about being disadvantaged or the non-Starplus classes being treated unfairly πŸ™‚ As for the latter taking those classes earlier, rather then to make them 'know their place', maybe the school just wants to widen their choices in career etc, since these students are weaker in their academics? By incorporating non-academic orientated classes in their curriculums, the student might gain interest in that particular class and decide to pursue that field. The Starplus classes are not especially disadvantaged in the sense that all lower secondary classes are required to take Drama, Art and FCE lessons.

As for the implication that the school is biased towards students from the CHIJ Primary because they have form teachers that teach the main subjects, firstly, I was not from the classes that you mentioned, but both my form teachers in Sec 1 and 2 were Literature teachers so I'm pretty sure that all form teachers teach their form classes at least one subject. By 'main subjects' do you mean the 4 subjects in primary school? If so, actually, any subject that has a score in your report book is counted as a 'main subject' because they all contribute towards your overall. About them being able to see their form classes more often, form teachers only have the extra half an hour of CE per week, and usually that period is used for administration matters, one-to-one consultations (about student's well-being, not about questions about lessons) or self-study. Often, my form teachers had to use 5-10 minutes of our subject class for pressing administration matters so I don't think having a form teacher that teaches one of the 'main subjects' gives any class an advantage over another. If you think that not having that is disadvantageous because you see the teacher less often, you could use the school email to contact the teacher (they reply within the day or at the most, by the next day) or page for the teacher at their staffrooms (that's why there is a list of teachers outside every staffroom).

As for the changes in timetable every term, admittedly, I was disgruntled about it. However, someone who used to work in a school said that it was because staff in schools leave frequently, which results in changes in teacher's schedules and hence the students' too.

I hope this helped πŸ™‚ CHIJ really is a great school and our teachers care a lot about both our studies and well-being; I've never been turned down by a teacher for a consultation regarding both studies and other problems (eg. stress). They also constantly remind my class to take more vitamins and have sufficient rest during the exam periods haha.

the changes in timetable every term can be irritating...the reason is because of staff movement but term 3 and term 4 this year had no changes for Sec 1.

the teachers do care for the girls' well-being. there is a counsellor who will advise the girls near exam period when they feel stressed.

Thanks, do you know in history, are the na classes prioritized for affiliated students or do non affiliated students stand a chance to enter?
