      Hi,

A friend has asked me for help regarding the following:

Her kid is in P6 this year and is poor in Maths. She has been informed that there is a Heuristic Maths Centre in Goldhill providing Maths enrichment and using this Unit Transfer Method that claims to be able to solve 99% of the problem questions. She is keen to send her kid for their June intensive class so she asked for opinion of the centre, this method used known as Unit Transfer Method, and how easy is it for the kid to pick up within a short period of time (now till PSLE) or will it confuse the kid further?

My kid is in P5 and I’m also keen to know how effective and easy to use is this Unit Transfer Method. Will it be confusing for the kid to be learning modelling in school and another method at enrichment centre?

Parents with kids at this Maths Heuristic Centre or have tried before, please advise. Also appreciate any advice from parents who has tried any other maths centre or courses proven effective, or willing to share how to teach kids to solve Maths problems more effectively.

      Thanks for all your help.

        Hi,Pen88n.

Ask your friend to go thought the UTM book first.

For me, I think onsponge is much better.

When you say "poor in maths", do you mean the child is failing or getting around 60 - 70. If it is the latter, most enrichment programs dealing with heuristics will help.

If the kid is failing, it would mean fundamental concepts are not mastered. In this case, better to get a tuition teacher to go through the P4 and P5 topics first.

Mastering heuristics without a firm foundation is like sweeping dirt under the carpet.

                    Hi Leanne

I did not purchase onsponge maths. I bought the UTM and challenging maths problems made easy.As both books using UTM, there are not much of a difference to me.You may want to purchase the challenging maths problems made easy as it is available at popular, whereas the UTM, you can either go to the centre to purchase or buy online. My son is using these 2 books for extra practices as his tuition centre is using UTM to teach too.I did not send him to Maths Heuristics@Goldhill as it is inconvenient and the fee is rather expensive for me, futhermore have to follow the centre's modules (check the website http://www.mathsheuristics.com for details)

I bought UTM too and found it easy to understand. There is another book Model Approach which suppose to be avaiable in Jun. Has anyone bought it? Care to share?
