Chung Cheng High (Main)

Yes. All sec 1 2 3 students in the school take HCL. It is the school’s way of showing to parents and students the school’s commitment and confidence to nurture students in Chinese. Given its SAP background and centre of chinese excellence, it is really different from other schools. The students in CCHMS also find it a privilege to do HCL.

Hi, my son likes Chung Cheng very much and he is concidering this school.
Could anyone kindly list down the pros and cons of the school? Thanks!!!

My girl (244) can go to CHIJ (TPY) and CCHM. Which is a better choice in terms of academics / CCA?
Distance wise: CHIJ (TPY) wins hands down (walk 5 mins), CCHM (1h bus journey)
Girl preference - CCHM (cos her friends mostly opt this school), hates CHIJ (TPY) - dunno why?
She has no HCL in Primary school, not strong in chinese.
Any advise? -

If u alrd discussed wit ur girl abt the distance and she is willing to travel for the sch she likes den be it, tho will be quite demanding. (As someone who traveled back and forth everyday from Sembawang to Nan Hua by train last time I would say is not easy, esp if train breakdown haha. Just be prepared to wake up at 5am everyday)
If dat is settled, just support ur girl's decision bah (she must learn to take responsibility at this age alrd). No point forcing her to choose a sch dat she don't realy want to commit to and end up she hate the sch and ur intervention in her choice. (If ur girl is not willing to take a stand on whr she wan to go, make sure she think thru it and make the decision herself).

Eddisema:
Your girl is the one going to the school, so let her decide which to choose. You can discuss pros and cons with her, eg:

- distance
- friends may not stick together in sec sch, however, CHIJ (TPY) also have issue of having affiliated pri school kids and she may feel left out. Whatever it is, she must learn to make new friends in sec sch.
- CL: she must be prepared to face a SAP school environment in CCHM. Maybe it would be a good choice in helping her improve her Chinese
- mixed vs girls sch: if this is a consideration
- affiliated JC: maybe this is a consideration too?
Both are good schools and quite comparable in academic standard. No harm letting her decide - once they are the ones deciding, they will be more positive in accepting whatever comes with the package (inconvenience, obstacles) and will be more tolerant and resilient to difficulties faced in sec sch life. -

This seems like a tough decision but yes, let your DD decide, after all she will be spending her next 4 years in that schoolMy girl (244) can go to CHIJ (TPY) and CCHM. Which is a better choice in terms of academics / CCA?

Thanks for the sound advices.
I am leaning towards letting her choose CCHM, but i have following concerns.
Concerns:
1) CCHM being a SAP school. There is online reverbs of revamping SAP scheme as it does not bode well for students when coping with multi-racial issues. Should this be a real concern?
2) Double edge swords at CCHM
a) HCL could beef up her chinese, but on the flip side it wedge her dislike in chinese further. What are the impacts of dropping HCL after sec 2?
b) CO at CCHM, something she like but seems very demanding, practice sessions already took up so much time. Not forgetting those competitions. How true is this?
For CCHM
At lower sec, what forms the basic subjects to require ?
- Language - HCL and English ? No normal Chinese?
- Design & Technology is a compulsory coursework-based subject (yr 1&2 only ?)
- FOOD & CONSUMER EDUCATION (all 4 yrs / examinable ?)
- Geography, History, and Social Studies.
- Maths (still E and A maths?)
- Lower Secondary Science
- Art / Social Science / FCE / D & T are these non core subjects?
At upper sec, what are the options ? e.g. triple sciences, pure humanities, etc ? And the criterias ?
a choice of offering History Elective (as part of the Combined Humanities subject) or History.
a choice between offering Geography Elective (as part of the Combined Humanities subject) or Geography.
=> What is the difference between His/Geo Elective and pure history/geography?
Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Science (Biology/Chemistry), Science (Chemistry/Physics)
=> Are these 3 options of science ?
=> Can i assume double maths, language are mandatory ? -
Any comments if CCHM is a school that stretches a student’s potential, both academically and personal development?
How is the school’s O-level performance?
Any comments between CCHM and VS, other than the difference that CCHM is SAP and gives more attention to the Chinese language.
Thanks. -
Also keen to know how is their school’s O level performance. Which JC do most CCHM go to ?
Thanks.
