What if didn't do well in sec 4 hcl n didn't do well on jc1 hcl??

You still have 1 more chance in JC2 to do it. Together with your other A level papers at JC2 year end.

In JC it is called H1 Mother Tongue.

Usually students try to pass in jc1 to get it done with. Otherwise u will have so many papers to sit for in jc2.
I am confused about this whole hmt thing. So do the IP students take O level hcl or cl at Sec 3 or 4? And what exemption does it give in JC? I heard still must take cl or hcl in JC after this O level cl/hcl

IP students who are doing HCL take their O level HCL at Year 4. If they do well enough, they're exempted from taking MT in JC.

Hi jtoh, just to confirm - IP students only take their O Level HCL at Sec 4, not Sec 3? Becoz I also heard others said at Sec 3??? So it's Sec 3 or Sec 4? :?
* IP students don’t take O levels. So the only O level subject they take in Year 4 is Higher Mother Tongue.
(So that they can be exempted in Year 5 & 6, to concentrate on other subjects & so that they can qualify for local universities.)

        * O level students who take higher mother tongue sit for 2 MT papers:
O level MT in Sec 3
O level Higher MT in Sec 4

        * O level students who don’t take higher mother tongue sit for 1 MT paper:
O level MT in Sec 4

If they pass it, they don't have to take it in Years 5/6. Pass is usually defined as D7 and above, although I've heard of some schools requiring their students to take H1 MT in Years 5/6 if their students don't score a minimum of B4.

Yup, HCI (JC) requires its affiliated HCI students and NYGH students to get a minimum B4 in O level HMT before they are exempted from H1 Chinese in JC. So, students who get a C5 or below for HMT O level (referring to the national exams, not school based exam) will need to take H1 Chinese in JC1.

(Students who are admitted into HCI (JC) via JAE (i.e based on Sec 4 O level results) do not have such requirements though.
They only need a D7 in O level HMT to be exempted from H1 chinese.)

So I guess H1 cl in jc1 should be easier than hcl olevel?
We were aware of the requirement before selecting the secondary school, so I did take a look at the A level H1 chinese past year papers before making the decision then. Other than what was mentioned by jtoh that a vast majority of the students would have taken and cleared the HMT at O level, in my opinion, the standard of A level H1 Chinese by itself is lower than that of the HMT O level chinese if you compare the two papers.

It's not compulsory for all IP students to take HMT. Varies from school to school.

That’s right. Only SAP IP schools.

Er no...my kids don't go to an SAP IP School. HMT is compulsory for all IP students in their school.

My DS2 is in CHS IP & during open house, some parents whose kids didn’t do psle hcl asked about it.
The principal says all chs ip boys have to do hcl coz they are sap ip.

What schools are your kids in SpartanMum?

HCL isn't compulsory in RGS. Not in RI either I believe. .

RI and RGS are not the only non-SAP schools offering IP though 🙂 Oh and it's HMT not just HCL.

how about Govt-aided IP schools , HMT is optional or compulsory.

If compulsory , then the kids who didn’t take HMT in PSLE will write any eligiblity test ?
Or during the selection process MOE will reject the IP schools for Non-HMT Kids ?
