I'm planning to ensure that I have enough food for retirement, https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=19097&start=260#p1826535 to provide me with enough food / vegetable

      Herbs today, veg tomorrow.
If only they allow me to rear chickens πŸ˜†

Oh was that the inspiration for your herbs? I would love to have a thriving veg garden and some chickens too. Before AVA crack down, I had neighbours who kept chickens in their gardens. It is not very hard if you have some land and nonfussy neighbours. My grandparents and parents had fruit trees and there is satisfaction in harvesting from one's own garden.

I told my dd we can plant longan tree outside hope it could get camouflage by the big trees there. No one will notice at all I guess πŸ˜‚

Beware of snakes if you decide to rear chicks, ducklings, rabbits and hamsters in your garden.

Beware of bats and squirrels if you grow papaya, mango trees. Expect your fruits to be stolen by wild monkeys at times!
Beware of birds, cats and otters if you have a koi pond or large aquarium.
Beware of stray cats if you have pet birds in cages.
Expect some monitor lizards, iguanas, tortoises, frogs and snails lurking in your garden from time to time.

If I'm going to spend time tendering my garden / plants, may as well make sure that they are useful / edible. Given that I don't have some land, it would be nearly impossible for me to rear some chickens πŸ˜‚
A thriving veg garden may still be possible, if we go the hydroponics vertical farm route.

I remember my relatives' kampong years ago where they had rambutans, pineapples, vegetables and herbs in their own backyard.
          And wells!
I prefer container gardens - not as space-efficient as hydroponics but satisfy my \"plants must have soil\" stubborn thinking. Gardens by the Bay's Flower Dome has some container gardens within the Californian Garden section. I think that can be doable in a sunny corner of an apartment.

πŸ˜‚ Don't they make life more interesting? Where I stay now does have all the above, except otters. But I just found out from a neighbor that we have a civet cat in the neighbourhood!

Are you the sort who maintains a few pots of plants and a fish bowl with goldfishes at your office cubicle /room? You can grow your organic herbs if you sit next to the window. Pluck some and toss it with your salad during lunch. Hahaha!
No leh... I have a tiny cubicle that won't be big enough to do all that πŸ˜‚

Good to have colleagues like you. Don't bother others or secretaries to water their plants or feed their fishes when they go on leave for 2 weeks!

Yes, quite exciting! But I've tiled up much of my green lungs! Haha...
Civet cats! Luckily not wild boars!

OT: Some months ago, I read that there were some jungle fowls near Sin Ming. Are there any more leftovers?

I also read that Anglican High School's garden has durian trees! They just harvested some durians weeks ago.

Just saw a few of those jungle fowls near Midview City this morning. Guess they must have escaped the claws of AVA.
