it's rather far to think of staying with kids and things like that. flats are so small...then i don't know if i will be hard to live with. don't want to be a nuisance to my kids.

Maybe I am seeing my brother's example now. While his flat is small, I can see he probably be very stress coping with 2 small kids if not for my mum as his wife and PIL are working.

i would prefer to have own place when i can do what i like rather than staying with the kids...they will be facing wife/husband. so yes, a 3 room flat would be good for hubby and myself since i would just be babysitting during the day.

I also don’t really like the idea of having non-family share our flat. Maybe when I’m alone (a widow), I may appreciate having another lady share the flat. An idea I have in mind for the future (like 20 yrs time!) is that one of my daughters (and future spouse) can buy our current 5-room from us, and my husband and I will get a small flat somewhere. Maybe one of the short-lease ones. That will help us realise some of our cash, and the daughter and family can have our current flat which has a good location.

Your daughters are in their late teens. You don’t need to wait 20 years! Can happen even within the next five years.

We still have one chance to buy direct from hdb. Will downgrade when children move out.

I know of friends who bought resale during the peak around 1996. Today, even if they sell their unit, will not be able to recover much cash. Besides location, timing is also important.

Was it really that high? New 5-rms were no more than $200k then, right?

as we age, our character changes...so i don't want to give my kids a hard time staying with them.
so i believe in own living space.

with the purchase of the 5 room, we have utilized 2 chances (first one being a grant).
son is 18. if he takes over the 5 room when he is married, i can use the money to buy a 3 room within the same estate (maybe).

They bought at around $300k. With accrued interest and levy, not much cash to recover.
