All About A Levels

Hi there,
I’ve just received my Olevel results yesterday and went for many jc open houses today. My L1R5 is 7, so after deduction for cca is 5. I don’t take hmt. I’m having a dilemma in choosing the right jc experience for me. Currently, I’m looking at either having acjc or vjc as my first choice. I’m affiliated to acjc, so with the cut off for science stream being 7, I would be able to enter with a score of 3. But for vjc, the cut off being 5 this year of the science stream, I would have just made the cut off point for that school. I live in the north east area, so travelling to both these schools would easily take an hour each by public transport.
Can someone give me some advice or insides to the difference in these two schools? Particularly in the culture, environment and inclusiveness. Been to both open houses and love the work and play but still study environment (as told by the student guides) of both of their jcs.

Hi there, I think you are being very wise in asking around for advice about the difference in environment/culture of your narrowed-down schools. During my time, I neglected to consider the vast differences in culture between certain JCs. Ended up in a JC where I felt so out of place & my 2 years there were miserable and affected my studies too. Looking back, I should not even have put it as one of my choices (even though by COP I just managed to get into science there). I ended up bottom of the top class. I should have chosen a lower-ranked school where it was less stressful and where I could shine instead of being marked as bottom all the time.Hi there,

Anyway, my general advice is, since u are from the affiliated school, ACJC will most likely have a similar culture and many of your friends will be there I suppose.
So...if u have enjoyed your secondary school’s culture, just stick with ACJC. Conversely, if u absolutely hated the culture, choose VJC instead. I’m not sure what’s the culture there, except for many of the boys will be from Victoria School I suppose.
I hope there are others who could tell u more about the difference between ACJC and VJC...I also am curious :boogie: -

I have always wanted to go to Meridian jc and its also the closest to my house as I stay in the east. As Meridian (11 pts) and Tampines jc (13pts) are merging, moe states that the COP of such schools may increase. So do you think I still have a chance to get into tpmjc?
There are also other options such as millenia (l1r4 - 16 for science) but I am not sure if I would be motivated to study there even though the fact that the syllabus is spread out into 3 years is appealing.

I think I can get into Pioneer jc (13) and Jurong jc (15) which are merging but it's really far away from my house.

For the east area, Tampines-Meridian JC needs to absorb the “catchment” of students in the East who score 13 points. Otherwise, where can they reasonably travel to? So likely that the COP of the merged JC will increase to 13.
Similarly for north-east area, Anderson-Serangoon JC’s COP is likely to go up to 13.
I think you can put Tampines-Meridian as 1st choice, Anderson-Serangoon as 2nd choice, Pioneer-Jurong as 3rd choice, and the rest put Polys (if u are allowed to. I’m not sure)
If your heart is set on Meridian, and U didn’t get it, maybe u can appeal based on proximity to your house. It’s no joke to travel so far especially JC life could end quite late daily. Good luck! -

L1R5- 7 after deducting 2 CCA pts my L1R5 is 5
The combi I am intending to take is H2 Geog, Chem and Math H1 Econs
I was thinking of NYJC and NJC (both cut off pts are 6)I was wondering if you could tell me more about these school? (eg culture & academics)(Distance wise Ny is nearer because I live in the northeast)
Or do you have any other Jcs to recommend?

Some advice for confused students out there. For most JCs, the materials are pretty much similar. What’s different is the environment and culture.
I had been in both an elite school and a neighborhood school. The experience was totally different. In a neighborhood school, the pace is usually slower and less competitive. For students who did really well, you might just get complacent and find your grades dropping (that’s what happened to me). Although I scored 60s in prelims, I thought that was okay because most other students failed. In an elite school, you are constantly forced to work hard and compete with the top students. In fact, most students go beyond academic, participating in leadership programmes and CCA. It’s the kind of environment that makes you hungry.
The next issue to tackle will be your combination. Be sure of what you can excel in. Based on my experience as a tutor, I would urge all students who intend to take H2 Bio to take some time to drop by a bookstore. Look at the topics, especially DNA and genomics.Most students who came to me had regretted that they took H2 Biology. It’s a totally different thing from O level. -

- meridian/tamp (11 points sci) - 30 mins travel time
- anderson/serangoon (9 points sci) - 1 hr travel time
- yishun/ innova (16 points sci) - 1 hr travel time
- pioneer/ jurong (12 points sci) - 1hr 15 mins travel time
- millenia (16 points sci) - 45 mins travel time
All the jcs I have mentioned (other than millenia) are merging, hence, their COP are expected to increase by 1 or 2 points max. Please help me on which order I should place these jcs. I need to submit the options by tonight so please help me with my future :?: Thank you.
