This article was published in nyjc dsa 2017 webpage. This DSA student repeated JC2. The teachers can only help the students if they take the initiative to consult them first and put in the tremendous effort himself, just like in any other jcs. He may be less inclined to academics but nyjc would have screened his sec school's performance before accepting him. Anyway, the onus is on the student to choose wisely.

        MMM:

My ds (Sec 4 this year) went to a couple of JC open houses with his friends. NYJC appealed to him because of the soccer field.

        .
Soccer field ? The your DS should probably visit EJC next year when it move back to Bishan Park ...It will have a soccer field and track hanging up in the air, right on top of the building πŸ˜‚

would it be difficult to get a high leadership post in IP jcs like CCA leaders or council? If not I would choose nyjc for a better chance at a stronger portfolio. From what I have heard Ny students are becoming more β€˜mugger’ over the years, maybe because COP keeps improving.

It's definitely more competitive to get leadership positions in IP jcs as the pupils are more all-rounders and confident that they will still excel in academics despite juggling with hectic cca commitments. They are aiming for the more competitive courses and also for full scholarship in university so they will put in the extra effort in CCA. But do not worry if you cannot get a leadership post within the IP jc. I know of many who volunteered themselves actively in leadership roles for youths in our community centres and in VIA, including overseas VIA, related tasks. I too heard that nyjc emphasises mainly on academic performances and their (ok) sports achievements are obviously contributed by only a handful of students who are likely accepted through dsa.

Okay thank you :). Being a student from a O level school i think ny fits me best, where I can start from equal ground as others. Hopefully i get in, considering the popularity of the school from what I saw during open house . :xedfingers:

Are you equating equal grounds = chance at CCA leadership position ? Then it may not be an apt comparison. Usually school will look for people for have prior CCA experience e.g If you want to be a football captain, you should have participated in football in CCA during secondary school days. You do not expect to be the captain of the football team if you do not have the relevant experience.

And it will be in the interest of the college to choose the best person for the role. A very experienced person who was a school captain in his secondary mainstream school football team compared to an IP student who only played leisurely, who do you think the college will pick as the captain of the college football team ?

yes i was viewing that on equal grounds, one would be at a disadvantage. Using the football as a example, I felt that in that case, the coach might be inclined to pick a player that played on the junior team ( Year 1-4) as a captain instead of a JAE student even if the JAE student might be a little bit better, since the JAE has not proven himself unlike the player from the IP track, Can't blame the teachers/coaches for that since it would be viewed as a safer choice plus there would be more chemistry rather than picking an outsider. Haha thank you for your input though πŸ™‚

Why would the coach choose a lesser player as the captain? Isnt he under pressure by the school to win medals?

And there are CCA trials for the coach to evaluate the abilities of each player. Unless you are talking of favouristm which occurs eveywhere , IP or JAE

from what i have heard, some IP schools junior and senior teams may have overlapping coaches. In the short time required to appoint a captain ( usually by May/June (?)) the coaches might not have enough time to decide the abilities of every player , and when picking a captain, show favoritism to the players that he has coached before and pick him as the captain since he is confident of his abilities. In my view, for JAE coaches would be less likely to show favoritism since they met all the players at approximately the same time unless the coach has coached at the student previous school.
Similarly for the case of Student councils which are voted by students, the IP students would naturally pick people they already know of which are the IP students, thus it might be difficult to get such a position.

One of my friend's child is in an IP JC and was a captain of his school team in the IP affliated secondary school . However, the coach did not choose him to be the captain of the JC team but instead chose another captain who came from a mainstream school via JAE because he had also coached that mainstream school.

What I am saying here is that this is not an issue of IP vs JAE, this is a issue with coach favouritism and in my friend's son case, the favouritism is towards a JAE student. Coaches today do not coach only one IP school such as RI. They have many assignments from many other schools who are non-IP too. They do need to make a living too.

In this particular unique case, it may be true to some extent. Are you competing to be Student council president ?

However, you have an equal and fair chance to canvass for votes and present your plans for student council during the election period. If you are good, obviously you will be noticed. This is similar in working life. If we just run away from challenges because they are \"deemed\" unfair, we would be always changing our jobs yearly πŸ˜„
