Need help from 2018, Sec 1 parents. My gal came back with a slip to activate her cedar email account.

This link given to her to activate her account is http://account.google.com, however this link don't seems to work, error message that the page cannot be displayed. Any parents out there facing the same problem as me.

Also, any idea do we need to buy a laptop soon, what's the school recommendation, I can't find any information from the school website. Thanks. :thankyou:
        Do you have this?

My DD's teacher mentioned can share laptop if your DC doesn't have one. (Not sure whether eventually might still need to get one.)

Don't mind me kaypo on this. I am a dad so computers is my department. I bought for DD1 a fairly top-of-the-line Asus Zenbook. Cost me $2k. Under 1kg and Core i5. After 1 year, I realized

          1. The laptop was over powered for the things she has to do.
          2. Bec it was so powerful, she uses it to watch Korean movies while doing her work. And not just 1 movie. A few movies. Alt Tab out when I approach.
          3. She developed an entitlement mentality. Didn't take care of her notebook.

I reasoned ok, first child. Made a mistake. She is in the IP stream. Has a lot of projects to hand in. Maybe just write off the cost and manage her attitude.

For DD2 who joined the O level stream this year, I got smarter. I bought her an Asus Vivobook. Cost $369 brand new on Q10. Has the most basic of specs to run Microsoft Office. Uses a Celeron processor (for mommies, it means a low end processor chip. The notebook just operates slower). This notebook didnt meet the school's requirement, but it met mine - below 1 kg. I absolutely abhor my kids carrying heavy bags. They have this turtle mentality. Carry everything they own to school.

The funny thing is when DD2 brought her notebook to school this week, half the class could not connect to the school's Wireless network. So they had to share notebooks. So I wouldnt worry too much about the notebook. Buy them something simple will do. You don't need Core i3 to operate Microsoft Office. They will just need Word and Internet Explorer. If they even get to use it in school given the poor WiFi coverage. Else, just go home use desktop.

There is an event at the end of the year where parents are invited to Fine Dining. The girls and their classmates will MC the event, sing songs, play music and serve us food in their classroom. I think a 3 course meal. With proper cutlery and tablecloth. Lol. Parents can mingle. Was quite entertaining for me. To see her work πŸ˜‚

Frankly, no need to be too gan-chiong over laptops, at least for Cedar (can’t say the same for other schools though). My 2 girls, one who has just graduated and the other in Year 3, had never exactly have to bring laptops to school. Yes, they might have homework or projects they may need to do on computers, mainly in Word and Powerpoint or even the online stuff, but certainly it’s something they can work on using the home PC, or even laptops lying around at home (i assume most of us have laptops), let alone having dedicated laptops for each child.

The usage of laptops or at least, the mobility of them, is certainly not intense, unlike in, for example, the universities.

But my girl had been asked to bring 3 times already since last week, though teacher said can use hp too or share if didnt bring.

So it is still better to have one to carry school on needed days as using hp might be too straining to eyes and cannot ask always for friends to share too.
But really not necessary to buy expensive ones ,just a basic configuration- light weight one should do.

                  Hi tyeogh,

I’m new here so need advice on laptop too. We currently have a Lenovo G470 laptop at home but it is very heavy for my girl to bring to school, although it is more than capable of handling the work that would be required from school but due to the weight, I’m considering getting her a smaller one. I saw the Asus Vivo book you had bought on Q10 too but wasn’t sure on its efficiency. So do you think it will suffice for the students to handle their assignments and projects? Which aspects of the Asus do not meet the schools requirements? My girl is in the O level stream too (1C) so if any mommies want to form a chat group would be most welcoming too .

                  Thanks!

                    Hi tyeogh,

                    Hi kwtenfys,
You are talking my language. I am very fussy about the weight of my kids' school bags. I actually have a kitchen scale at my main door. Lol. My kids are not allowed to leave home when their bags weigh >3 kg. And I get my helper to check every morning. To me, nothing should be more important than their physical well being. So it depends on where one's priorities are. Health or Education.

Most notebooks are >1 kg. To get one below 1 kg, one needs to choose a lower end processor chip e.g. the Asus Vivobook. Or pay for a high end model e.g. the Asus Zenbook. As explained in my earlier posts, there are some cons to getting the higher end models. For me, the primary concern is I do not like to spoil my kids.

                    >>Which aspects of the Asus do not meet the schools requirements?
Cedar recommended a Core i3 processor chip. Scroll up. Someone kindly provided the specs. The Asus Vivobook uses a Celeron chip. The Celeron chip is slower than the recommended Core i3 chip. Essentially, what it really means is the Vivobook just takes more time to operate a task. For example, longer time to boot up, cannot multi task, need to reboot often etc. She is a student, so what is the rush?

                    >>So do you think it will suffice for the students to handle their assignments and projects?
I have seen DD1 I.P. school work. She uses only Word. Sometimes, she has to access certain websites. So she uses Chrome. Or Internet Explorer for older notebooks. Rarely does she do a presentation, in which case she will need Powerpoint. In fact, I have never seen her use Powerpoint before. Powerpoint and Word are included in the Microsoft Office suit which can be powered by Celeron chip notebooks. So, imho, the Asus Vivobook should suffice. In any case, as I explained earlier, Cedar's WIFI coverage is poor. The teachers understand it. So the students are not expected to hand in school work during lessons. Computer work can therefore be done at home using the home desktop.

(Yes, one can use hp in school to hotspot for internet. DD2's hp is controlled by Screentime. She has limited access to her hp and no teacher is going to tell me to make her use her hp for school work. To me, hp is unhealthy. I hawk over my kids eh? Dad from hell. Hahaha)

The only likely problem for such a choice of notebook is your DD will complain. Mine did. That it is slow. Not fast enough like her elder sis's. When I delved deeper, her complain is bec she could not watch Korean drama on her notebook like her sis. I am more than happy to say NO.

Lastly a Disclaimer. I do not work for Asus or in I.T. or have anything to do with Asus. Also, this is just my personal view on computer stuffs. Hope it helps πŸ˜„
