Comparing wif mine... All in about $800... First try just after I completed my active NS in 1995. So doubled in 7 yrs... But maybe I had a bit more lessons compared with you since you already have a PDL.
wow, how much have the rates increased...
i remember i spent just less than $400 on my license, from the first i think $20 to register for basic theory... passed it at first try, which was during my BMT block leave, just days before my PDL was going to expire... that was in 1988... -

Will PM you his contact but he teaches auto car only.Hi Tri-mum,
Can you PM me the contact details of the pte instructor?
I', also in the same situation - learnt more than 10 years ago but hardly drove. Now I feel I should start driving again so that I need not depend on dh for every ride!
Actually I learned driving for the same reason too but after I got my license, I hardly drive. Reason being, whenever I drive, I need to adjust the rear mirror, adjust the car seat forward and higher because DH is much taller than me...so that's the reason I find it's so troublesome and just ask him to drive us around. -

Yeah, that's quite troublesome. DH was in fact thinking of buying a 2nd car for me to ferry the kids around. However, given the escalating COE prices, he's been quiet recently

I remember taking just less than 20 lessons (of 1.5 hr each). A classmate who went to book basic theory together with me at yio chu kang then, was saying where got enough... guess things just fell in place for me.

err... the PDL (provisional driving license) was the learner's license given once you pass basic theory. only with this then can take practical driving lessons. then at the same time can take advance theory, and only when passed advance theory then can apply for driving test (even though you could have just started learning and is not ready yet) first, as it takes about 1-2 mth to schedule.
it's not the red license given for drivers on probation after passing. -
Tri-mum:
[which location are you looking at? My private instructor was at Bt Gombak....nice and patient guy....
Pls kindly email () or pm me his details too.
Many thanks.
Also seeking all of you's advice. I initially thought of learning driving so as to be able to drive my girl to school when she reaches morning session as the school bus driver mentioned that he will come & fetch at 5.40am for morning session !
But some serious thoughts I am reconsidering my decision. Apart from morning fetching there will be CCA, extra lessons etc which will involve intra-day fetching. if I stay nearer, the likelihood of school bus fetching will be higher. So moving might still be a more viable option right?
Thanks.

Since I'm the TS of this thread, thought I'd give an update.
We decided to go with a private instructor simply because DW can't afford the long traveling time to Ubi/Woodlands driving centre. We looked around for some time and finally found an instructor who is based in Toa Payoh. DW would take a train to Braddell station to meet the instructor.
Well, this instructor started off fine initially. But eventually, DW can't tahan him after a couple of months of lessons and we made a switch.
What we didn't like about him:
1) Never punctual - he ALWAYS picked up DW late, and ALWAYS drop her off early. We thought this was common with all instructors since they have to rush off to pick up their next student...
2) Always on the phone - making/changing appointments with his students
3) Frequently make stops during lesson to chat with friends or to buy breakfast
4) Chit chat a lot during lesson and worse....made sexist remarks or even cracked \"coloured\" jokes!! -
Another major factor which prompted DW to switch instructor is because the first instructor goes to the Ubi circuit for training and test. DW doesn't like that circuit because the surrounding roads are narrow and traffic in Ubi area is very heavy.
So for the second instructor, we specifically looked for one who goes to the Woodlands circuit. We hunted high and low for some time, and finally settled on one who lives in Yio Chu Kang area. So DW will start and end her lesson at YCK MRT.
And my goodness, immediately we found this instructor to be the exact opposite of the first instructor! Whatever the first instructor is, this instructor is not!! He's absolutely punctual, makes minimal phone calls, no idle chit chat, and no stoppage during lesson! We were so glad we made the switch!
So to cut a long story short, DW passed her practical test 2 weeks ago on her second try. Now I get to be chauffeured around on weekends.
