      Winnie08:
My child has been offered a place in Singapore Sports School in 2018. I am writing to ask for advice on what the student culture of Sports School is like and how I can support her as a parent. Are the students there playful and addicted to phone games or are they serious and conscientious in their work. Would appreciate if parents can advice me on this forum or PM me so that I can see how to guide my child accordingly. 🙂

      Hi Winnie,
You did not attend their open house?
Hmm.. you shd pose the interviewers these questions when you guys were called in for the interview.

        Hi Winnie,

I don’t think it’s fair to make decision based on that. Some kids are more addicted and some just aren’t. Many went online to use the search engines or listen to music while others use it for social media, watch videos and play games.

Overall, we are very impressed with the regime in SSP. Although we have rejected the offer due to personal reason, we have friends’ kids who are currently studying in SSP. They are given many opportunities to compete both locally and overseas. Most importantly, they are also able to juggle both sports and academic well because the support is great from coaches and teachers.

          hi Winnie

I don’t have children in SSP but based on my friends who have, their kids are very disciplined. One reason why their children are in SSP is because the children are often national team sports athletes and want to represent the nation. Somehow, SSP is able to accommodate their overseas training stints and competitions very well and provide academic support in lieu of regular which you won’t be able to find this kind of support in regular schools. When my DD had to missed schools for trainings/comps in a local IP school, there were no makeup classes. The student is expected to arrange for her own consultation if she cares enough, otherwise, it’s really up to you to manage.

Thank you for the feedback. I’m relieved to hear that the kids there are quite disciplined. Your positive comments triggered my memory and I recall that when I visited SSP, I was told by one of the staff that many of the teachers teaching at SSP try to enrol their children into SSP as well. In addition, normally after one sibling enters, the parents will also place the younger sibling(s) in there.

My girl did just that. She changed her mind after their official orientation. PM me if you want to know more.
