School Of The Arts, Singapore

Reenie:
My DD1 is Year 2 VA student. Just to share our experience, she was not in school art club in primary school but she took art lessons outside school. The portfolio was put up by ourselves and we chose a mixture of pieces that she did at home and during art class. Second half of p4 and whole of p5 is a good time to collect her art pieces even if it's doodling or incomplete works. These can be showcased in her portfolio to illustrate raw talent.hi mummies and daddies,
My daughter is keen in going SOTA (sort of make up her mind and i am exploring on her behalf ) and I'm not sure if you can help me out here with some questions:
1) as she is keen in visual art, she is not with any school CCA like art club currently, do we have to send her to any art class to get a portfolio done for the DSA purpose? If so, any particular school or course you can recommend ?
2) i understand its a 6 years programme leading to IB dip. is there a chance for her to further her studies to local uni after these 6 years? i am assuming she would like to pursue her studies after that but since its SOTA, any idea what ART related degree or higher tietary she can look at ?
3) For parents already have kids in SOTA, do you mind sharing the workload, teachers quality and culture? Sometimes by going to Open house we are not sure about all these except the vibes.
as we are tight in our finance, we are looking at local uni or course if possible, so SOTA is quite a \"dream\" to us or for herself to pursue, i am wondering if we need to send her overseas after 6 years there.
IF you like to PM me personally, its ok too! thank you so much for any input!!!! I really appreciate.
As I understand, SOTA offers IBDP and IBCP. One leads to a specialised arts tertiary pathway while one is more general depending on subject combination. There are scholarships and financial assistance schemes to support students at SOTA and I believe there would be similar support schemes post IB to support the child's interest.
SOTA is relatively more open in its culture granted it's an arts institution. So that's something parents need to mentally prepare ourselves. I have had a bit of culture shock along the way but am adapting to it.
HTH and all the best. -
hi i heard the classes are banded in SOTA being R8 as best class but then there are very outstanding students in R1, R3, R5 in terms of psle results and artforms, can someone confirm this as just want to make sure i am not misinformed because for the upper level I heard the classes are mixed abilities and there are some very good students mixed into the other classes for some reasons. anyone here know what are the REASONS for doing so as got a couple VA students on scholarships tat are from other classes not R8 so it is very confusing. Is there really a rumoured best class?

Do take note VA art form is not an easy subject to score for IB. Last yearโs average for VA is 5. You should consider the potential total IB score your child can get if she is in VA. Anything below 35 limits the options for further studies after IB in local U.
what is the average for the other art forms? -

:whut: created this acc just to reply you. I am usually a lurker brownsing. Nay, there is no best class but mixed abilities classes according to a teacher I spoke. The classes are group according to weak in maths or strength in something and class with good language or scores in English. Not sure if this is the actual case but this is what was told to me by a teacher and another upper level parent. Scholarships are not all from a class and the best students from each year are definitely not from a single class for sure.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me what is the school hours like for dance in SOTA, please? Do the students have to stay back late everyday or only on certain days?
Also, do you get to choose the genre of dance?
Thank you in advance.

Thks James1968. One more thing I notice my DD hate her Lit teacher Ms Seah a lot so should I speak to her or email her or so think this is a bad idea? I read my DD whatapp class chat, the students also dislike this science teacher Miss Loh who they say was not very lazy to teach any idea how do parents like us try to help cushion this.

I reckon you meant \"very lazy\" to teach and I can only nod in agreement for this science teacher. Anyone here knows any science tutors familiar for sota syllabus to recommend. -

Hi. Do you know what book the year 1 student are using in Sota? Can they chose between standard and higher chinese?
Thanks!
Likely cannot choose. They are assessed on their abilities and sent to the different classes. My daughter took higher chinese in Pri sch but ended up not in the best chinese class so very shocked as I sent her for higher chinese tuition during the holidays for nothing. I let her quit the tuition since not fated to be in the best chinese class.
