Why never paste the article in its entirety? You know many people won’t bother to click on the link. It doesn’t take much effort to drag your mouse down another 2 paragraphs to copy and paste.

Anybody in the IT line will know how rapidly things evolve in this sector. Can’t possibly teach every new programming language. Before you even finish teaching a new programming language and master it entirely, another will pop out.

And not every industry employs the same programming language in their systems. Despite so many programming languages, the basic programming fundamental are similar in nature. Once you know one, it is not difficult to pick up another one.

Those in the IT field need to be versatile. The basics of computing need to be taught before one can progress to higher level modules. How can a comp science graduate have zilch knowledge of the fundamental workings of a computer and programming? It’s akin to saying why did they teach me ABC in kindergarten when they don’t even ask or test me on my ABC when I go to primary school.

Besides learning the basics and fundamentals of computing, comp science students also learn to analyse user requirements and propose solutions using technology. These all come in handy when working.

I hope university graduates will realise that very little of what they learn in university will be directly useful in their eventual job so they should work on thinking skills, time management, self-learning etc, not just content. Some exceptions will be the professions, I guess, but even in medicine, law, engineering etc, things are always changing. Many graduates work in fields different from or not directly related to their university degree, and that is a fact of life.


It’s a pity if employers can’t see beyond immediately usable skills, but the original writer did say that there was coding assessment which he didn’t fare well in, so maybe the potential employer was looking at those results, not the computer languages per se.

Lots of mahjong, booze (always thought that it was strange to have a club on campus but we weren’t complaining), plenty of late nights TCSS, hazing (that’s probably what the university calls it but obviously not the term we used), etc. And I get to study some stuff during lectures / tutorials (if I manage to get to school) which I can honestly say I have no idea what were them today…
