Hubby is not the house proud kind of person. When we last painted, it was at my insistence because it was already 10 years. After the job was done, it felt good to see something different. The nippon guys did a great job because it still looks as good after 2 years.

Sometimes it’s good to renovate a little but the dust and inconvenience is really unbearable.

for the new flat, I did the planning for the past few months…combing through yahoo and qanvast for different designs for each room, kitchen, work area in recess and living room…copying some ideas, cut costs in some areas and also modify to suit our needs. Different wood colours can create such a different feel.
I like the Scandinavian concept. Sufficient storage will do but not too much until it is cluttered.

I’m the "not houseproud" type either. If not for the fact that we rented out the flat for so many years, it may not have ben repainted at all in 20 yrs! But we repainted a couple of time between tenants to freshen the place, and again before we moved in again.

When I was living in BB, I didn’t repaint for about 20 yrs before I rented it out.

Guess am the odd one …

Depends on the demand, and on the tenant. Some are fussier. For us, because my sil was handling things for us, we decided to get the flat repainted after a few years to make it easier for her to find a tenant.

Repaint is easier if the house is relatively empty. Imagine the hassle of covering the furniture with old newspaper and shifting the things around for the repaint

I prefer to sit back to relax …

doing renovation of any kind is best if the place is empty...no eyes to see.
when we had the place painted, it was so unbearable to see everything covered and messy.

I repainted because the colour on the walls were getting 'old'.
when potential viewers came, they were impressed with the walls most because they asked if we just got it painted.

But sometimes really need to reno due to wear and tear of most things.

Been living in my current place for almost 13yrs. Over the years we have done some minor jobs here and there but looking at the condition of most of the stuff, think in another 2-3yrs time we should do another major one.

                    Or Move?

                    That is one consideration...

Some people will wait until a lot needs to be done, then they move out for a few months and get the whole lot done. My flat is about 20 yrs now, and we had the bathrooms renovated 5 yrs ago. Other than that, we've had the flat repainted 2-3 times over the years and a few things replaced (the not-so-messy things). There are things that are deteriorating, and we know that we will probably have to do something in a few years' time, especially the kitchen cabinets. I think we will do the \"one fell swoop\" renovation rather than piecemeal. Might as well move out and get all the messy stuff done at the same time.

That's what we do. So renos are usually done over the school holidays. We either move to my parent's place for that duration or to our other apartment if we can co-ordinate the lease such that the place is vacant for that period.

My kitchen is in need of a do over. Over the years, the cabinets, especially the area around the sink, is warping. I am surprised that the fridge is still chugging along after 12 yrs.

after staying in my place for 20 years, many things have become very old...it will cost a lot to renovate.

to do a total renovation for a 30 year old flat is not worth the money. this is the reason why I think it's better to move. for one, everything is new. the ID prepared me mentally that the rooms in new flats are SMALL compared to my present place. so to maximize walking space, study cabinets are best wall mounted.
why does HDB make rooms small and living rooms big? :? people don't sleep in living rooms.
