can i generalize n state that those kids who do well in Lit are those who have a rather good level of english and an even higher level of empathy/ EQ? I mean.. they need to read n derive what the author is saying from those words... takes somewhat digesting and regurgitating of emotions within..

My dd2 is not very good in English. But taking Lit has helped to improve it by ALOT. Also, it has triggered an interest in reading.
Dd1 is excellent in EL and Lit but she doesn’t want to do Lit in JC. She says she enjoys books and all, but studyg them just kills her interest. I dunno what she means though.

mine loved reading but after taking Lit and seeing how she is struggling, i almost think she needs tutoring to expand on her views to get more marks

          I do tutor Literature.
I will first go through the text with my student, making sure he understands the plot truly well. And then after finishing the book, we will move on to the bigger picture and deal with the Themes and Characters of the book to have a deeper understanding of what the story is all about. Then, we will relate this book to our own experiences and try to find its relevance in our own lives, and make sense of it all in our world.
Then there is the poetry element, where we will read poems, learn more about its structures, rhythm patterns and also the various literary tools.
Besides the reading and understanding aspect, there is also the written aspect of Literature, as the student needs to answer sourced-based questions and write essays. Again, there is a format to answering such questions. And finally lots of writing practice on the student's part.
Hope this gives you a general idea of how my Lit lesson is conducted.

            Hi thanks for info.

Are there kids who can read n understand but unable to express n expand on thoughts? I guess alot of writing n deep thoughts r involved so when that doesn’t happen, it’s where u lose marks?

Definitely, and these kids will score Cs (or Bs if they are lucky).
Reading is the most basic, then comes understanding and analysing what you have read to form a critical opinion.
                And you're right.
One must be able to translate these thoughts onto paper. The depth and scope of these thoughts are crucial. But ultimately you must be able to express them fully and clearly. The marker can only grade you based on what he reads, so you will definitely lose marks if you are not able to bring your points across effectively.

You can read my reply here regarding how marks are lost in Comprehension. I think it applies to Literature as well.

LOL! B if they are lucky. The ability to write ultimately determines their score as the students are only as good as the words they put on paper, no matter how much they claim to understand the text.

For the O Levels, I teach English and Literature as separate subjects. Only in IP the two are combined as one subject, and then I'd tutor accordingly. But the fees will differ from the O Levels session.

And yes, I do tutor Upper Primary. I teach from Primary to Junior College - English, Literature and Chinese. Almost all of my students will stay with me from Primary to JC, or Secondary if they choose to go Poly after that.
