Likewise for Tien Hisa which my girl joined since K2. When DD1 entered upper primary, we realised DD1’s zuowen and oral were not able to keep up to standard, whereas her main paper was alright. So we signed her up for 作文口试班 and she has since performed better in these areas.DC said all draft as well as final essays marked. Strange thing is he didn't improve much or make any breakthro until I change him over to specialized in W@W for compo. So, no personal pointers to help kids ustand how to write better & context. To me, correction & marking are just process of writing & u'stand'g what & how is more impt for the child to improve.
So I guess it’s the same for TLL Eng. If one wants to see a breakthrough in compo, maybe joining specialized creative writing class helps. But TLL is still useful for other components of the English paper. -
lee_yl,
Don’t know why DS never benefitted fr TLL for all Components. Maybe he was just dreaming in class. But then if he likes SYT & didn’t want to part with TLL, how come no improvement?
That’s what pushed us to make extra (split) effort to run both W@W & then Academia as I realised for the diff components, even the professionals hv their specialty & they’re trained teachers to boot. ST truly more than met my expectations & he came as MOE trained with many years of teaching experience & English ex-HOD. Unlike the young & untrained (some are fresh grads fr NTU) teachers. I used to think very highly of TLL & sent my kids fr P3 onwards but by P5 had to pull out esp the mess created after TLL sold to US equity. They’re now more profit oriented & also cutting costs.
Anyway, just sharing past experiences. KSP parents with young kids still need to verify what suits their kids. -

There is no one size fits all centre.lee_yl,

Just like what someone shared earlier, there are parents who lamented W@W and Academia.
Aiya, to be fair, not all SYT teachers are lousy. I think at least they are more enthusiastic than the older experienced teachers and can make lessons fun! My kids do enjoy lessons with the younger teachers. -

I am also keen to know whether TLL practise final correction as in asking the kids to write the whole compo as in correction after marking. lee_yl can share.[/quote]I recall during their lower primary years, yes, both my girls were made to do compo corrections by rewriting out the whole passage.
Hi lee_yl, how would you rate the teaching of compo and compre at TLL? For compo, do students complete in class or bring back as homework? According to my DD1, those few students from her class who always score high in compo and whose essays are frequently shared, are having tuition with TLL. This makes me think actually if we get the right teacher, TLL EL is worth a try. She had science tuition there in P3 but due to frequent changes in teachers, we withdrawn after term 4.love1001:

My girls had been with TLL English since K2. So far, majority of the teachers are good except 1 or 2. Nonetheless, I am quite satisfied. For DD2, she is lucky to have the same Eng teacher who taught her through P4/P5/P6. The teacher last taught at a GEP centre before joining TLL.
But when they reached upper primary level, a lot depends on the individual teachers. Some made them rewrite the whole thing, some only request to rewrite part of the compo (build up or climax). -
thanks lee_yl. My DC2 needs that rewriting of the compo to ingrain into his head. Need to find that center to hone his writing skills. This DC2 is a headache, am considering TLL.

Hi lee_yl, can you share who are some of the teachers you consider good in TLL? TIA!

Hi, GIE is now known as EIE (STAR). As for the normal classes previously known as PIE is now EIE. There are only 1 or 2 EIE (STAR) classes per level and is strictly by invitation only. Teachers identify those students who are very strong in Eng and offer them to join the Star classes. These are probably the potential A-star students. One of the criterias is must be strong in writing so for the child to drop from 34/35 to below 30 is indeed a big concern. It might due to the change in the writing style that the child is unable to grasp fully. To change from one tuition centre to another, I am sure parents are looking for some improvement, to stretch the potential of the child. LP is quite good in compo but not so in paper 2.Private,
\"GIE\" mentioned by that black-faced mom means \"Gifted in English\". It is one of those enrichment classes, conducted at Learning Point tuition centre.
Oh yes, both my girls like SYT too. -
My DC2 also like SYT.

Regardless boys or girls, all like SYT. Lifespan of female teachers is short, maybe by 40 years old, demand start to drop.

Interesting sharing. I might need to change my strategy. Maybe pump DC2 to the limit. Compo and regular class for English. The problem is which center on compo?
