My question is should I just stay what is being givenby the school or should I also enroll my DD to some outside phonics program like \"I Can Read\", \"LCentral\" etc etc?

Will you be able to share which method or phonics programme the kindy
will be adopting for the children.. half and hour per sitting is somewhat
a little short a duration to introduce phonics.. hmm.. :?

Perhaps they're gonna go slow and steady say... like one letter sound
during one 30min session? This will mean the programme would take
longer to complete... assuming that the kindy is deciding to teach
the whole / entire phonics programme from N2 to K1/K2.

      Hi Buds,

Would need to check with the school what kind of phonics program they are doing next year. I guess I would continue to put my DD at outside to learn extra phonics & reading program to supplement further.

Don't know why the kindergarten now introduce phonics at K1 to K2 for my DD.In the past, DS did not have such program.

        Hi All,

Just received the letter from the Kindergarten that said from next year K1-K2 the school would exted extra 1 hour program in which day there would be 30 minutes of phonics. There in each week there would be at least 2.5 hours of phonics assuming there is no public holiday.

My question is should I just stay what is being givenby the school or should I also enroll my DD to some outside phonics program like \"I Can Read\", \"LCentral\" etc etc?

I share the exact sentiment. Dilemma! Just went for assessment for my gal at Lcentral and would most probably enroll her. My gal has phonic lesson in her preschool too but thought that it may be good to give her more exposure and pick up phonic faster so that she can read more. She likes to read and could read simple story books with those high frequency words. I can see her effort to try to prononuce some words by breaking them and i am so comforted.

        Hi XK,

Did your DD wnet for an assessement at Tiong Bahru LCentral for assessment yesterday? Had dropped you a PM.

          Hi Buds

Thank you for the insight and information on phonics learning progress.

On one hand i would like my gal to pick up phonic earlier by K1 so that she can read and explore more books especially she is a keen reader. On the other hand, i am also thinking whether i should just let her learn at a slower pace in her preschool. By doing so, she would not need to attend extra enrichment class on precious sat.

However, after discussion with DH, we decided to enroll her for the reason mentioned, i.e. she can read independently earlier and i can introduce more books to widen her horizon and interest.

          Hi titank

Saw ur pm and have dropped u a PM too. 🙂 Seem like we share very similar concerns and thoughts! 🙂

My son’s kindergarten is using the St James Church Kindergarten curriculum. Their phonics teaching is something like Sandy Sunfish, Nicky Nightingale and so forth. Does anyone know if this is Zoo Phonics?

Hi Jacsplace, I don't think this is Zoophonics. Zoophonics goes like this Allie Alligator,Bubba Bear,Catina Cat, Zeka Zebra etc....The child has to say out the above and make out the first sound together with the actions. Hope this helps...

                  Hi Buds,

Do you know the method to teach phonic in Lcentral? I asked about their method and whether it will clash with Jolly Phonic that used in my gal’ school. They said that they are different methodology but it should be okie… e.g. Jolly show the children the word/letter and asked for the sound while Lcentral used picture and teacher or the child will say out the word… afterwhich they are supposed to use listening skill to hear the 1st sound. I thought this is quite good too cos it train their listening skill. I hope they can work in hand in hand.

Do you think they can compliment with each other?

It shouldn't be a problem esp for older children in K1/K2..

cos they're more mature in terms of age and will not get
so easily confused. As for complementing each style of
teaching.. it might.. cos the basis.. the foundation of
learning Phonics is learning to hear sounds in words.

I have not personally seen for myself the LCentral style
of teaching Phonics, but i don't suppose it would cause
much of a confusion. Different styles have different
strengths and merits. Having said that the only thing to
look out for is for any difference in sounding out the letter
sounds... especially for the vowels.. (a,e,i,o,u).. cos the
different approaches may adopt different accents, ie. cud
be British English, American English or even Australian! 😉
So, i should say mostly the concern is over those few vowel
sounds... as for the consonant sounds it can also be the case
of different 'w' and 'q' sounds.. some school of thought use \"werh\"
and \"querh\" (koo-er-h)... while others may use \"woo\" and \"qoo\"....
Mebbe you can find out about these first before you settle on it if
you wish. Hope this helps. :celebrate:

                      Hi Buds,

Have check with the Kindergarten that the school would be using Rigby Star Phonics.

                      http://www.edventurebooks.com/index.html

Guess I would cotinue with outside enrichment as a form of supplement.

                        Hi Jacsplace

My girl is in St James Church - Nursery this year. Understood from her teacher that blending of words will start next year - K1 ..i thought it is too slow as compared to Barker Kindergarten where blending of words will be taught in Nursery according to my friend today...
