I feed mine kibbles and fresh cooked food. I order the kibbles online and it is delivered. Average price is about $37/3kg pack. Each pack lasts about 10 days so average cost of his meal per day is $3.70. Ha. Dogs do not digest grains well. But if we look at a ingredients that make up the kibbles, more often than not, there will be grains in there. The cheaper, the more grains the make up the bulk.Alamak... That’s why lah, to give the best care for this dog is really no joke, stress! Like food wise, a GR owner staying nearby told me no grain, so she bought those expensive kibbles (hers $35/pack vs supermarket $7/pack) and restrict canned meat to twice a month only. Hers is 11yo, looks fit at 29kg and her GR is always wearing socks when out walking. She gives her dog a monthly injection ($60 per shot) to ease doggie’s hip problem.
An uncle asked me for what I keep such an old dog, stray dog later bring don’t know what diseases to my kids. :scared: And after I read Zeit’s “quarterly deworming” post, really freak me out! :scared:
Actually, Golden Boy is not just obese (7yo at 40kg), his set of teeth is also not in good condition.
TBH, I have heard DH mentioned twice before, that if not for me, on that night, he would have pretended not to see the dog crossing the road and headed straight home. Last night I told DH, now I think he makes sense.

Deworming is just a matter of giving them a tablet to get rid of whatever parasites. Maybe when they are puppies gotta do with higher frequency. Once adult, no need to do so frequently especially if they are not outdoors all the time and do not come into much contact with other animals. It also depends on the dog's a habits when you bring it out. Does it pick things up from the ground or like to chew on the grass, etc. I do 1/2 yrly for all my dogs so far.
I won't say that it is easy having a pet, but I will not say that it is all that overwhelming. A lot of things are common sense + some research. -

OK, maybe from my HP I had a fleeting glimpse of his tight curls and mistook him as a partial Goldendoodle. :faint: But I think he will look more GR after tomorrow's grooming and brushing as he had been roaming the streets for days.
I think he is almost 100% certain to be a purebred goldie. Dog DNA tests aren't that conclusive, really - probably not good enough to tell you about ancestry and predisposition to health problems. I think Lee_yl's taken him to a vet, so the vet should be able to tell if he already has hip dysplasia. Cancer etc - no one can tell. If it happens, it happens.Zeit:
Did the vet tell you Golden Boy is purebred or a mutt?
You may wish to conduct a DNA test on him to predict his weight, potential health issues, his ancestry, behavioural traits. Some GRs are prone to hip / elbow dysplasia, cancer, seizures and eye problems as they age. Also, if you don't groom regularly and leave the poor thing at your unsheltered patio, it may develop dermalogical problems. You may need to extend an MCST-approved trellis or awning to shield him from the elements.
I personally would commit to a lost dog financially and emotionally for another 6-7 years only if I'm assured of its genetic makeup. I suspect some breeders sell mutts on Gumtree, Carousell.

I think kibbles from regular supermarkets won't be nutritious enough. It's like feeding humans with Gerber stars and energy bars. Better get quality kibbles from Pet Lovers Centre or feed him some canned meat. It's a large dog, so you need to spend more money to buy its food.
With his existing joint problems (he can't go for long walks), you must be prepared to fork out some money for medical treatments/consultations in the long run. Deworming is on quarterly basis. Not sure how he is going to lose weight unless you provide him with a customised diet.
Rehoming GRs may take a while as it is not a HDB-approved dog.
It's useful to find about the breed/parentage to preempt future health issues & vet costs, better understand its temperament for training purposes, at least for myself lah. Funnily, crossbreds tend to be more resilient than purebreds actually. Usually for purebreds, you'll get the proper https://www.skc.org.sg/pedigree-certificate that matches the microchip no. Some pet farms/ethical breeders also allow you to view the sire and dam which must both be licensed/registered with the local kennel club.
Responsible breeders will not use sires and dams with genetic/hereditary issues to breed for sale. There are https://stomp.straitstimes.com/singapore-seen/woman-fined-11000-for-illegal-dog-breeding-and-keeping-unlicensed-dogs. So far the dogs our family members owned/owns have the the proper documentation/certs.

I think the above health issues unique to this breed of gundogs may come sooner or later. Not trying to 'curse' the doggie or anything...
One thing I like about the GR is they are excellent swimmers, possibly due to being the descendants of the Tweed Water Spaniel. You can take GR to a quiet beach to exercise by tossing a frisbee or ball into the shallow waters. So very fun. Maybe lee-yl can sit at her balcony and throw balls towards the open area and let the GR retrieve it. That way, she doesn't need to walk kilometres every evening! -
lee_yl, you are kind and all so softie to extend your helping hands towards the lost doggie in the middle of the road. Most people would not be bother but you do. Some think it is just another dog. While some think doggie is like another "human" or companion.
-
But walking kilometres every evening will make leeyl very healthy! -
