In page 5 of the above link, the last sentence of Paper 1 (Writing) states that ‘Candidates may also come up with their own interpretation of the topic’. This is the official website which is an additional assurance to what the school teacher had said. So ask your DS not to worry at all, 加油!

What if it was written totally out of points…what will be the worst case? Will the language mark also lost?

The content is marked separately from the language. The weightage for each component is the same (20 marks each). So even if the pupil writes off topic and scores poorly for content (e.g. 9/20), he/she can still do well in the language (e.g. 17/20) if it is well-written.

This is what I received so I’m not sure if 100% accurate :

                    Psle 2018
                    Continuous writing:-
                    Theme: Teamwork

Pls help yr child move on to rest & prepare for last 2 papers. No use going thro "what if" didn’t do this & that coz it’ll give your child the sense of failure. You don’t want them to go thro last few papers feeling defeated alr.

They must keep their motivation high. Don’t look back nor kept grilling yr kid what they wrote or didn’t write or why they didn’t write this or that in. Your anxieties, spoken or unspoken will be felt & transferred to your child. That’s not what you want right?

After every paper I’ll casually ask how the paper goes & let my child speak up. If they don’t, just give a light squeeze & hug saying "it’s OK. Over alr. We move on to tackle next paper. Want yr favourite sushi for lunch?" (whatever yr child enjoys). That I find more constructive in helping our kids manage stress that alr comes with them having to face major exams stress.

Not to worry, whitecarla. Last year, the topic was ‘ A Gift’. The picture showed a young man but my son wrote him as an old man. Both of us were so worried till the extent that I called his school teacher to clarify. It’s actually ok.

If you look at the SEAB.gov.sg for English PSLE Continuous Writing, so long your son kept within the topic, he should be fine.

                        All the best!
I believe for English composition it is fine as they have made it more flexible for children to explore their ideas using the pictures only as a guide and don't even need to use all the pictures. However in CL2 picture composition , please advise the children to be more careful. During prelims, my boy also mistook the picture of a teenage girl dressed in casual blouse and pants as a lady so his entire composition revolves around the mother instead of the daughter. He thought he was doomed but he told me the picture was indeed very deceiving and there were no helping words in the list that hinted it was a teenager. Luckily, his teachers discussed and decided they cannot fault him because the picture was not 100% clear and since he had an interesting story different from the rest, he got quite a good score. However, his cl2 teacher told him in PSLE, they might not accept as they mark according to a guideline. So gotta be very cautious else it will be considered out of point and language marks will be affected as well she pointed out.it
