No light -> Underwater plants cannot photosynthesize -> Underwater plants decrease -> Less oxygen produced since fewer plants -> Less oxygen in water -> Fish decrease

plants cannot photosynthesize and so lesser dissolved oxygen in water.

you may be right, but if both compete for oxygen, both fish and plants will decrease at the same time.
(i am just a student so i may be wrong)

Now that PSLE is almost completely over for most kids, if they're still keen & curious, it's good to encourage them to pursue for the right answer.

In cng15 answer is correct & of course we do not expect a P6 able to explain full scientific process.

          http://www.dole.eu/dole-earth/farmtour/bananito/hotspot/banana-curved.html

\"Bananas go through a unique process known as negative geotropism. Instead of continuing to grow towards the ground, they start to turn towards the sun. The fruit grows against gravity, giving the banana its familiar curved shape.

But why? The answer lies in the botanical history of the banana. It originated in the middle layer of the rainforest, where there is little sunlight. If the fruit were to grow towards the small amount of light that penetrates sideways through the vegetation, the plant could overbalance and topple over.

So bananas developed a way of growing towards the light without destabilising the plant.\"
          :goodpost:

I wonder what happens if the child answers \"Because it is coded in the banana plant's DNA.\" :rotflmao:

            Mum of 3:
My DS said it is mentioned in the question that unripe banana has chlorophyll, so the ans is probably about growing upwards to get maximum sunlight for photosynthesis.

Yes. According to DD, the unripe banana is green and has chlorophyll

You may be right, but if both plants and fish are competing for oxygen, they will decrease at the same time right?

                That seems true as well...

Shouldn't oxygen decrease first since the plants are respiring and take in oxygen?

the underwater plants still receive some amount of light i think

Maybe... but typically, in such questions, I think u need to be able to link it in a sequence.

Eg. Fertilizer poured in, the light decreases first. Then what's next? It affects photosynthesis, which affects the plants. Then fewer plants... Less oxygen... Etc etc.

But never mind la. It's over. Go enjoy the well earned break for both parents n students. If really want the 100% correct standard answer, next year go n peep at psle booklet answer sheet. 😄
