I hear that MOE has transferred a lot of the teachers and principles from well known schools to neighbourhood schools in a bid to be more equal. If so, then is there still a need to go for a well known school?

I also hear that as parents who send to \"well known\" schools tend to be more focused on children's studies, they will always get additional tuition from learning labs, berries etc to supplement. Hence, teachers who end up rotated to these well known schools just don't really teach much and expect the kids to go to the tuition agencies to learn instead. End up, students are bored and don't really bother learning in school.

I was thinking if I send my kid to a known school, I won't have to send for tuition as I thought the teachers will be very on the ball.

Any one can share their experience?
Teachers don't get transferred or rotated, unless they requested for it. Only teachers on the leadership track (i.e. future Principals / Heads or existing Principals / Heads) are rotated.

There are many parts in the learning journey, and teachers only form a small part of it. There is no such thing as 'teachers don't really teach much'. If the students are bored and don't really bother learning in school, is it really the teacher's fault or the attitude of the students that is questionable?

My child is from a \"known\" school but does not go for tuition. Many of the school students do. But I absolutely do not think the teachers expect kids to go to tuition centers to learn. The teachers all do their jobs admirably.

No doubt some kids already know some stuff from their external tutors but it does not mean the teachers leave the rest to flounder. And no, I don't think any kids go to school not bothering to learn just because they have tuition.

There will always be parents who send kids for tuition, regardless of whether it is from a well-known school or not. Whether you send your child to tuition or not depends more on yourself than whether you send the child to a \"known\" school - your expectations, kiasu index, child's learning ability in school & with tuition, parental involvement.

at the end of the day, parental involvement is absolutely necessary. showing an interest in the child’s work is necessary.

How old is your child? Have you started the child on enrichment?

Parents that send their child to branded schools generally have more resources for atas tuition. I think it has little to do with how much the teacher teaches.

                - I doubt you can say that all teachers in all branded schools are more on-the-ball than all teachers in non-branded schools

                - whether or not you want to send your kid for tuition is up to you. Nobody will twist your arm and force you to do so.

                - I believe all schools will provide remedial lessons for kids who are continually failing whichever subjects.

                - furthermore, MOE new changes say that no more graded exams for P1 and P2. So the marks for the mini-tests (aka non-weighted assessments) don’t really matter. Previously kiasu parents would pay for tuition in order to give their kids a competitive edge over their classmates. Up their ranking and so on. But removal of class and cohort rankings —> who the hell cares about the marks anymore? Good marks then ok lor. Average marks then ok lor. Failing marks, teachers will give remedial (and nag u the parents during parent-teacher meeting). Continue to fail? Still promoted (I think)…child probably has until 6th year PSLE to catch up.

                - so just send to neighborhood school. Can’t see any advantage for branded schools anymore.

Except if the school has affiliated secondary school, right?

                    Oh yes, you are right!

But then again, recently in the St Nick’s thread, somebody mentioned could not meet the affiliated COP of 230. So better to choose a school with lower affiliated COP 😉

In every school, there will be someone who cannot meet the affiliated COP. My friend’s daughter scored 190+, could not meet the 200 for express for her IJ school, so she went to a neighbourhood school to do Express, as she did not want to do NA in the affiliated sec school.
